So this is what the vaunted "creative class" that's supposed to rescue the city do to fix it?
They're no better than the hoodlums that steal the hub-caps from our Rambler or knock the bird-feeder over every devil's night!

I would hardly consider most of the people that were there 'creatives'...

I bumped into a group of kids from royal oak, as well as some jock types from WSU. More of a general curiosity/jumping on the urban exploration bandwagon.

What the hell is going on there now today? I was in the area and drove by, only to see another parking lot of cars. I also saw a couple "Smart" cars parked in the lot. When people driving Smart cars start visiting the place, it's the official nail in the coffin.

Someone is going to get mugged of their DSLR, or fall into a hole and injure themselves [[knocking on wood myself here), and then the city/owner/someone will *have* to do something about it.

I've had half a mind to just gate off the parking lot and charge $10 a car...

There were a couple shady looking local folk roaming around the street in front offices and parking lot harassing the photographers going in and out. I'm actually surprised nobody has been jacked for their stuff yet. I did notice a lot of piles of glass in the lot, so a few people have had their cars broken into.

Kinda shows driving a "smart" car does not make one more intelligent .

But having said that it must be hated that while you are trespassing and stealing somebody is doing the same to your car ..... Karma

Sorry for the double post I cannot find the edit post icon on my "smart" phone.

It's technically not trespassing. The place is open like Swiss cheese and there aren't any "no trespassing" signs posted anywhere.

Great pictures and commentary. I like the picture of the guy "stealing" the tire. I'm glad he found a unique momento. Ha ha ha.

Freep Packard plant through the years.

I sure hope the water tower can be saved and erected somewhere downtown. Would be nice to see it somewhere on a roundabout or something. And the Packard name repainted on it. Or at least move it to the packard proving grounds.

To me in my European view this embodies America like your view of us living in a windmill infested country. Truth be told, there are at least two only a mile from me actually.

There's a much nicer water tower already there on the proving grounds.

A group of friends and I were in town visiting and we stopped by the Packard. We only took photos from the street and did not enter the complex. I saw the lot, and there must have been 25 to 30 cars parked there.

We did run into a group of people who were residents of that neighborhood and had finished walking through part of the plant. So I guess it's not all visitors.

I love how you are so upset that people are in the plant and are sure they are going to get hurt. When you are doing the same exact thing. Save your BS indignation.

This is why we didn't park. Though people are entitled to photograph the plant on public property regardless of what residents think. I'm used to photographers and tourists taking pics of skyscrapers outside my front door.....So area residents should now get used to the factory becoming a spectacle

I'm hardly upset at this point, it just seems like matter of fact. I'd probably be upset it the prediction came to fruition. A higher volume of patrons means a higher chance for injury, hence the ambulances on standby at large events like the Auto Show or DEMF. Add to that the bravado factor I sometimes encounter with newer explorers [[as in, yeah, you could *probably* walk out onto that rusty ledge and come back but why?), and it just seems like a ticking time bomb has been perpetually accelerated.

I've met a few of the locals, from the neighborhood to the east, they seemed pretty accustomed to the steady stream of 5 to 10 a day, curious as to whether they mind the additional traffic.

unless someone has already stated the very obvious.
At this point those buildings are entirely unsafe. They
were unsafe 5 years ago, 10 years, 15 years. At this point
tho after all the fires, the structural disassembly, the
collapses, the elements. The owner of this place. Regardless
of any past indiscretions or his intentions for mining it for
valuables. [[Ramble on sentence) From a public
safety perspective they should be razed. How futile would it be
to seal every opening? Expensive and and temporary.
And if the city was in control of the buildings would they be in
any better condition? Does Detroit have to money to take it down?
I dont envy the owner in the least. Even if he did make some money
from his plan I doubt it would be worth it. I know it wouldnt be
    worth it to me

Heh, I think it plays on several levels. Ruin porn, exploring a bit and enjoying a hobby. I want a camera and the one I want is that T2i but just don't want it to be one of them things you drop cash on and don't use enough. I suppose they sell easily enough If you had too.

Maybe I'll start something new to be different, I'll shoot ruin porn-porn. I need some volunteers! Maybe I'll start a ruin porn wedding photo bussness? Or not do anything and just troll forums. o_0
