sean, looks like your dual identities have crossed themselves up.

Ignoring all of the problems I find in your rant, I am left to wonder what the point of it was. This is an Oakland County event, and DDad's equally head-scratching post seemed to suggest that either Pontiac, or maybe some other place [[like Detroit) was more of a cultural/urban center than RO. The former just isn't by any number of measures, and the latter is completely irrelevant to the topic. You seem to want Royal Oak to "rue the day" that anyone thought that it was a decent, vibrant place to be. How stupid. No shit it'd be nice if it happened in Detroit, and no shit it would be much bigger than RO. Again, what is the point? It isn't called Royal Joke for no reason, it's called that because it is a joke. The main demographics that RO appeals to is the faux-Yuppie crowd [[faux because they see themselves as urban, without actjally having to live in a city) and the bro crowd. Many people in Metro Detroit consider RO some kind of "urban" meca. They see a few square blocks of quaint botiques, a couple large new apartment buildings and an art theatre and consider it a bastion of urbanity. I think this is because they have not experienced a real city outside Detroit [[if they have even seen Detroit which they likely have not, outside a yearly trip to the ball game or fireworks).
We have folks on this form claiming its the single most "urban" and vibrant place in the Metro. I have to disagree. RO isn't really urban at all. Its Disneyland urban, lily white and "safe" to drop the kids off for the day. And if you look at Greater Downtown, you see a fairly huge [[10+ times the size of RO) urban area that is gaining vibrancy each year and each month as more and more busisses open and more people move in. Once the lightrail opens I think this issue will be settled... Detroit will finally get the recognition it deserves. A development boom will start and the number of pedestrians per block will increase exponentially, far outshadowing RO's potential which is close to being reached as there is little land left to develop, and no transit connection beyond a smart bus.
Also, as far as a cultural center, Royal Joke isn't much. Not much more than pontiac which has the Crofoot. Maybe it is compared to other burbs, but it aint nothing thar special when compared to say Midtown for example, or even Dearborn. Sure they got the Main art which plays mainstream indie flicks, and the RO Music Theatre which has some mainstream shows, and a couple galleries. But besides that, there really isn't much. You have to go to the city to find the real underground and cutting edge culture... RIC, DFT, Burton, all the various DIY venues, the artist colonlys, etc.
Urban envy ... me thinks?
To each his own.

So YOU call it Royal Joke, big deal.
Some refer to Detroit as Detoilet - doesn't make it true, does it?
I think your posting says more about you than it does Royal Oak. I've said it before, and will say it again: Your anti-suburb sentiment is showing again.
Casscorridor doesn't know the etymology of "Royal Joke". It was called "Royal Joke" because as my dad, who also grew up here, says, "In the 1970s you could throw a dead rabbit in downtown Royal Oak at 5 pm on a Wednesday and you wouldn't hit a soul." You could do that today, hit about 20 people and get arrested.
Some people are very self-righteous with their anti-suburb or anti-city sentiments. Like it's something to gloat about. No, it's rather divisive. I love the city. I would prefer to live in the city, I don't have the resources right now to do so. But hey, if you like the suburbs, I'm not going to dislike you. Or if you love the country.
Hey, just wanted to apologize to Danny regarding this post. It was a bit over the line and I shouldn't have resorted to insults. My sincerest apologies Danny.
I'm saying parts of Detroit are already more vibrant than [downtown] RO. I'm here every day, and have been watching the vibrancy slowly build over the past three years. This fall there are more students living on/near campus [[wsu/ccs) than ever before. And the buisiness climate is far better, to the point that a recent transplant to Woodbridge starts a once a week home pick-up restaurant thing and has dozens of orders and a Freepress and Metrotimes article before the first day. Everyone wants to jump on any new business that starts up. Like the Taco Truck at Third Bar which so far underestimated their demand that there is 45min waits and they had to bump their closing time up from 11pm to 2am. I've never seen people so enthusiastic and supportive of new ventures than in Detroit. And almost anyone can start something up. All it takes is an idea, ambition and good old fashioned hard work. I don't think there is a better place to start a new business than central Detroit.
Like Rudy's vision of 42nd StreetIts Disneyland urban, lily white and "safe"
After all of the handwringing over the open carry issue at AB & E, this is the result:

So much for the "wild west" scenario.

I said this from the start....Its much a do about Nothing. All the chicken littles crying the guns are comming the guns are comming...stay home, there will be blood in the streets....must be the same people who said, planes will fall out of the sky when the clock strikes midnight on Dec 31, 1999.....LMAOAfter all of the handwringing over the open carry issue at AB & E, this is the result:

The city commissioners, and those taxpaying condo owners who weren't allowed to have parking passes to park in front of their own homes may have a different idea ...
I finally got my parking pass. It wasn't easy and I hope it's worth it. $15 to park. Unbelieveable.
I have to admit it, I walked in last night. And I had a really good time. The ......... level was very high, and you could pretty much tell who was carrying, but the music was very good. [[Orchestra Internacional in particular). I hope sincerely the scumbags with guns are able to control themselves. I'm still hitting the first City Council meeting to get this shit straightened out. If this is going to be here every year, it's time to change some laws to benefit the majority, not the nutbag minority.
Workers in downtown Royal Oak are being jerked around like crazy. The women who work at Write Impressions had their bag lunches confiscated because in Wirtzville, you can only eat ABE food.
Very self-rightous. But sadly, typical.I hope sincerely the scumbags with guns are able to control themselves. I'm still hitting the first City Council meeting to get this shit straightened out. If this is going to be here every year, it's time to change some laws to benefit the majority, not the nutbag minority.
Just because you don't like guns that does not mean that those who do are "scumbags". There is nothing wrong with law abiding citizens arming themselves for protection against those with criminal intentions.
Typical OldRed......... comment. Bitch, bitch, bitch.
I hope you can convince CONGRESS to reverse the Constitution, cause RO isn't going to defend you.
What an asshat you are.
I have this aversion to the Wild West attitude expressed by guns on hips. Sorry.
You don't have to appologize, you are entitled to your opinion.
I appreciate that you are able to state your opinion in a mature, dignified and polite way without referring to those whose opinions differ from yours as "scumbags" and "nutbags," unlike other posters on here.
I commented early on in this thread that I thought A,B & E WAS NOT the proper venue to be carrying weapons at, but I'll be damned if I'll let a communist/socialist who clearly hates this country as ORDB does stomp all over the rights of other people to do so without saying something in response to her vitrol. It is a matter of law, and if she wishes to demean legally law abiding people by calling them "scumbags" then she can live with the consequences.
Perhaps you haven't seen her picture standing in front of the Capitol Building, flipping the institution the bird? If she doesn't like the way this country has constructed the Constitution, perhaps she should find another one that will allow her to speak with the "freedom" that she seems to have here.
It's her method, not what she is saying Gaz. She has no respect for anything other than her warped opinions and has frankly called me and a number of other people liars because we have different opinions and experiences. Is that what you want to defend?

There lies one of the differences between extreme liberals like OldRed and most conservatives:
If a conservative does not like guns, he or she does not buy one. If a liberal does not like guns, he or she thinks nobody should have one.
Well said, Dc, well said.
Res
I trend toward the liberal causes most times, but I believe that guns have a place in society. DB's like the open carry people are strictly attention getters. I'm considering a permit for CCW, though, and would take it with me when I go places. Times are rough all over. A conservative does NOT have the freaking franchise on gun ownership.

I never said conservatives do have the franchise on it.
[[and is the profainity necessary?)
It may seem like they act like it because they are usually the only ones who stand up to the far left fringe that want to take away rights and mold the constitution to suit their social agenda.
No, they act like it. And tell you how you should vote too.
The last administration molded the constitution to fit THEIR agenda, and I didnt hear you whining about it then. Nobody's taking away your guns Mr. Heston.
And liberals don't tell people how to vote? That is laughable. Anyway, if someone suggests you vote a particular way [[be they conservative or liberal) once you're in the voting booth the choice is ultimately up to you. You do have the right to vote however you wish.
The last administration did not mold the Constitution at all. The last molding of the Constitution took place on May 7, 1992 when the 27th amendment was ratified. That happened to be during the Bill Clinton Presidency.
