Yes, in my case I am not renewing, I have current, standard drivers license.
I'm getting an enhanced one for the first time.
That's why I must come in with my supporting paperwork and take new photo.
If you want to switch over to the enhanced, as my wife and I did in the summer of 2019 [[we fell for the scare tactics about not being able to board a plane) you have to be there in person with a copy of your birth certificate. If your birth certificate has your maiden name as my wife's did, you also need a copy of your marriage license. So the witch behind the counter made us make a return visit to complete the process for my wife.

You have to read online, on their website, what's required before you go. I just made several transactions, this past month, at the SOS, including enhanced license, and had no problems whatsoever. I made sure "my papers were in order" before I went down.If you want to switch over to the enhanced, as my wife and I did in the summer of 2019 [[we fell for the scare tactics about not being able to board a plane) you have to be there in person with a copy of your birth certificate.
