Posted this tale on Facebook, and it got such a response I thought I'd share it with the great folks on DY:
During my days at old #2 [[Vernor) from 1959 to 1965, the ping pong table in the squad room got a helluva workout before and after every shift change. There was a minor problem; you couldn't leave a ping pong ball in the squad room or it would disappear. So all the players kept their own ping pong ball secure. Where? Why, inside their handcuffs, in the cuff case. Probably 80% of the guys there did so. Now, the only problem was when you took down a bad guy on the street, and three or four officers pulled out their cuffs, you had a volley of ping pong balls rolling down the street. On a windy day, it was absolutely hilarious seeing four police officers running down Humboldt or 24th or whatever to retrieve their ping pong balls. Hey, I was one of them...........
