I am curious about the long-term stability of the store. The history of big box retailers in the city hasn't really been that successful lately [[duh). The location helps a lot. Woodward & 8 Mile is centralized and close to middle-class/wealthy neighborhoods in the city...and could therefore theoretically survive if only Detroiters in the area went there with little suburban patronage [[because, let's face it...a lot of suburbanites along Woodward will still opt for Royal Oak.

I find the less-than-24-hours schedule and single entrance slightly demeaning...though it's better than nothing at all. And truthfully, I know that shoplifting is a concern. Late-night shoplifting is a concern in any 24-hour store...no matter location...so I could imagine reduced hours was done a lot for that reason. At least those that live in the neighborhoods to the north and west won't be complaining about increased noise and traffic at night.

I heard an interview with one of the mgt from Meijer who said it wasn't going to be 24 hrs because they wanted consistency with the other stores in that strip mall that close earlier. Plus, they figured most of their customers rely on public transportation, & they wanted to be open during hours of more frequent bus service.

Incidentally, Meijer stores in Ohio ARE NOT 24/7.

That's definitely not true. I live less than a mile away from one in Cincinnati [[actually IN the city, it has a Cincinnati address), it's open 24/7.

It's a good store, I shop there all the time. It's popular with the locals, it competes well against the hometown grocery chain [[Kroger's is HQd in Cincinnati).

All together, there are 12 Meijers in Metro Cincinnati [[10 in Ohio, 2 in Northern Kentucky), they are all 364/24/7 [[Christmas Day being the day they are closed).

Another item for the list of reasons why I hate Ohio.

That they opened in Detroit and don't just have a walkup window with bullet proof glass should make you thankful and not worry about "demeaning". It is the price you pay for the very high density of thugs and criminals in the population.

That's why I said "slightly." Because first impression was..."Really...one entrance." But I get why.

Anyway, the main reason I was writing was because I actually got to go there first hand after work today. I talked about the single entrance, but to give it a break, it is a VERY large entrance. Probably the size of 2-4 entrances that go into other Meijer stores. So it is nice to see that they were conscious of crowd control. The store is very nice inside, and seemed to have everything I would expect. Inside, everything feels "normal" [[though, the electronics section is sectioned off at the front of the store...which is understandable for security reasons)...and I like the look and arrangement of items better than the Royal Oak and Rochester Hills locations. It was super easy getting in & out of the lot [[for me, at least) with so many entrance/exit points.

I have preferred the two-entrance stores as I can decide if I am just doing groceries to go in the 'grocery' side door to avoid the extra walking... oh well. At least now I can do less driving to get to a Meijer.

I heard that. I hear there's a Tim Horton coming up on Davison off Dexter. For sure they will need bullet proof glass sadly.
