Beta might've beaten out VHS as the dominant videotape format except for the porn industry's early adoption of the lower-quality format. Laserdisc would've been much more successful if not for Pioneer's strong stance against porn, and they controlled what discs got pressed. Everyone learned their lesson by the time DVD came along.
I know for certain, also, that one of the two major residential video projection manufacturers which made large-screen three-gun CRT popular for home use would not have survived his early years without the San Francisco small-house porn theaters.
Sam Runco used to regale trainees at his factory with his stories of learning how to deal with the scuzzballs who owned those joints. They usually wouldn't finish paying his installment plan, so he'd buy a ticket for one of the movies...but bring a squirt gun [[a real one, I'm not talking code) in to douse the projector and make it short out.
Sure enough, they'd call him for service, and he'd get the rest of his money.
But yeah, porn has made and broken a few technologies...and a few fortunes.
Cheers!
