The only one I can think of is Nick's Gaslight, but its west.
That was the original Bookies, before they moved up to Cass.
Are you thinking of Jack's? It was on Grand River, one block west of the Book Building....same side of the street as Trolley Plaza, across from the Gaslight's parking lot. When I worked in the Book Tower back in the early 80's, we would go there for lunch occasionally. Can't recall when it closed.
Bookies was IN the Book.
I remember the bar, the name Jack's isn't that familiar. I worked at Michigan Mutual and we'd go there for lunch too, back in the 70 - 80's. I also remember a bar called the Telephone Booth, but that became the Rosa Parks Depot, 30-40 years after it was forced to close.
