Sorry, I have doubts about any of these "I've heard of" stories. They are often canards, much like urban legends. Remember when everybody talked about people "spitting on Vietnam veterans when they came home"? Alright, everybody knows the story, but show me one instance of anybody, anywhere, spitting on a Vietnam Veteran returning home. Metaphor becomes reality.
Think about what you're saying: You acknowledge that some people use transfer payments to survive in hard times. These are very hard times indeed. The unemployment rate -- calculated the old way, before they doctored it -- is at Depression levels. And yet, you've heard too many stories of people abusing the system to have sympathy FOR REAL PEOPLE WHO CANNOT FIND WORK AND HAVE NOWHERE TO TURN FOR HELP BUT THE GOVERNMENT.
For a similar line of reasoning, see "I'd rather innocent people go to jail than have the authorities be soft on crime."
