"Please Mr. Postman" wasn't Motown's first hit single. It was the company's first number one record.
By 1961, Motown had already had a few sizable hits.

Guess the NYT didn't know, that's not Gladys singing lead on "Don't Mess with Bill" ....
I think Motown 1st hit single was MONEY! written by Berry Gordy in 1959.

The marvellettes were under rated; they were the best of the motown girl groups.
