This one offers a Old English D being dropped from the front of the Compuware Building.... sorta Detroit's version of NYC's ball drop.

I like how they put on there "1st annual motor city new years eve"Are they sure they'll have a 2nd annual?
Sounds cool! But where to stay that night at reasonable rates?
I've been waiting for an opportunity to ask this. I've seen several versions of the Old English D. Is there one officially preferred version for Detroit? It's for an art project. How about this one?:

$85 to get in the Compuware Atrium, or just the Park?
[ PURCHASE TICKETS ]
General Admission $85.00
VIP Cabana $1,200.00
* Includes Valet / Bottle Service / Private Cabana / Coat Check / 8 tickets
What recession?
Well, you get 8 tickets, so it breaks down to $150/person. Still a lot, but not really that crazy for a NYE party where it's open bar and food is included. Bottle service is also worth at least $75.
Excerpt from Freep:
"Producers behind the inaugural edition of the Drop, a downtown New Year's Eve party, are finalizing details as the countdown -- make that dropdown -- to 2011 ticks closer.
The event will include a neon Old English D descending into the heart of the city -- outside the Compuware building at to Campus Martius. Event cofounder Jerrid Mooney said that momentum is building for the party, for which revelers will gather in the Compuware atrium, the Hard Rock Café and around an outdoor main stage, where DJs A.D. Cruze and DJ Tom T will spin.
Spotlights will beam across the the 50-pound, 6-foot-by-4-foot D hanging 60 feet above the stage as it begins its descent at the 10-second mark. At midnight, an explosion of sound and light will fire off as the crowd is led in "Auld Lang Syne."
Organizers expect the D drop to be visible to people who are in the area but not attending the party. The ice-skating rink at Campus Martius will be open until after midnight to coincide with the drop, according to Campus Martius officials."
