I've known of only one parking lot in my life time referred to as the "blacktop"
anyone else?
Anyone interested in a game of 500 or home-run derby?..There's only a couple of cars parked on the east end of the blacktop near the credit union. The Eastwood gang is tired of curb ball and wants another challenge.
I remember both the parking lot across 7 Mile from the school being called the blacktop as well as the one behind the convent
I guess the "south of 7" folk never realized the convent parking lot had the same name. Just goes to show how provincial we can be in our thinking.
Hello all, it has been a while. As I remember it, the lot across from the school was the blacktop, and the area behind the convent was the parking lot. I need to tell you that I made a quick trip up to see my nephew play football at Lake Orion a couple weeks ago. Took some time to see my sister Linda, class of 69, who lives in Roseville. We drove through our old neighborhood, down past 12468 Laing, and I must say, i cried. I knew it wouldn't be the same, but I never expected what I saw. From Moross to Casino, had to be 5-6 houses boarded up, many of those were those of my friends, and I was in those. My house was overgrown, and far from what it was back then. Funny thing, I hadn't been there since 2003, and I remembered the houses being further fron the street than they were this tine!!!!! I told my sister that when you hear, "you shouldn't go back". that is right. When we were leaving, I drove to St. Jude. My beacon. I have a picture of it for my wallpaper. When we went up the stairs to the doors, of course they were locked. My sister said she couldn't believe they were locked, and I told her that they have been locked for many years when mass was not being said. She has fallen away from the church - another story. Anyway, we drove around the property, and saw some windows boarded and some broken. I saw the house my friend Dennis Carr lived in, saw the spot on the sidewalk that I got a black eye from getting hit by a can of veggies in a paper bag for a food drive, and absolutely loved the landscaping that CFG and all the others have done. I came away from my day realizing that my old neighborhood is no longer my home - my home is with my family here. But, of all the emotions and feelings I had driving around Laing, Morang, Denby, the triangle, Whittier, Carlton, and Kelly, my heart is still at St. Jude.
Laing, you just reinforced two adages..."You can never go back home again" and "Home is where the heart is". I can understand your reaction, especially after 7 years. I read that your take home message in your report is St Jude is your beacon. Having SJ as your wallpaper is a great idea....a constant reminder of what was and what can be. Hope everything is well in TN. Update on the diaconate??Hello all, it has been a while. kellyroad, things are well in TN. We are into the second month of diaconate classes - we are going over the Old Testament and Prayers of the Church now. I am really into this since as we all know as cradle Catholics. we never really learned the Bible much, and from just the first two classes, I have learned quite a bit. There are 33 of us now and hopefully 33 will be ordained in 4 years. That trip to Detroit was quite a close moment. Won't ever forget that.

oh, and I remember during the 68 World Series, I had my transistor in my belt, and the ear phone wire going up my sleeve so I could listen during class!! And, as I am writing this, I am looking at the frame on my wall with all the team's baseball cards and a picture pennant from a game I went to in 1968. Priceless!!!!!!!

Next time up let us know, and we can assemble our group and meet at St. Jude's. I'm up for a ground round at Dunn Inn [[formerly Paper Station and I believe still owned by Jay).
If anything, make it your goal to deacon a Mass in your old home parish. I will look forward to your sermon.
that sounds like a plan!!!Laing, long time, no hear.

The deterioration of Laing Street is a fairly recent occurrence, probably in the last year.
I agree eastland. Not so much of the boarded up homes in that area when I cruised thru with some friends last summer. There was a disturbing smattering of this north of St. Jude then, and of course west of Hayes has been a war zone for some time now.
We have a new administrator - Fr. Jovita! We are all very excited because his enthusiasm is contagious, and he's all about moving St. Jude forward! Our novena starts this week, and personally speaking, I find the 9 days of our St. Jude Novena and incredible spiritual renewal. We are also having our annual Spaghetti dinner on Saturday the 23rd after the 4:00 Mass. All are welcome....Sorry, Z, your polish dinner will probably be early next year, but you're welcome to join us in the Italian fest!
St. Jude Novena Starts tonight at 7pm. All are welcome!

You may not be able to make it to the Polish dinner, but you better make plans to come back home for our St. Jude 70th Anniversary next year. We could fit in a Tiger game too! :-)
Don't forget Spaghetti dinner immediately following 4pm Mass, novena and benediction on Saturday!
Don't even try it, Z. We know you're lying, young man
