"ROYAL OAK, MI - We are getting our first look at the newest Detroit lion. This is Binti. She is the first lion cub born at the Detroit Zoo since 1980.

Binti was born on September 10, 2020 via a cesarean section after her mother, Asha, was observed going into labor naturally, but failed to give birth. "

Poor little thing had a hard start to life though:

"Because of the life-saving surgery and recovery, the normal bonding process for Binti with other lions could not happen. She is currently undergoing a gradual process of being placed into the lion habitat at the Zoo.

After her birth, staff cared for her for the first several weeks of her life as she lived in an incubator where she was given daily bottle feedings. They played the recorded sounds and exposed her to the scents of the Zoo’s adult lions while she was in the incubator."
