The New Detroit Cool....Moustaches

Nathan Skid's recent blog about Astro Coffee in Crain's Table Talk blog had me laughing out loud.

As I waited for Hughes, the 30-old owner, to wrap up a video interview, hordes of mustached twenty-somethings were filing in the coffee shop.

It seems Detroit hipsters are becoming an increasingly homogenized breed.

Most were clad in flannel with either cut off jean shorts or rolled up skinny jeans with dress shoes. Those not wearing thick plastic-framed glasses had Wayfarer sunglasses hanging from their dingy v-necks; a must if you want to be part of that scene.

"The bigger the mustache the better I guess," a patron sitting at the coffee bar joked. "It takes a lot of effort to be that cool."

This whole "hipster" fetish that has taken Detroit by storm the last couple of years is flat out laughable, but congrats to the owners of Astro, it's great coffee, and whatever the next fad will be, its followers will most definitely drink coffee... that's one thing you can be sure of.
