Does this ever actually happen? I know when I was in school, I didn't want to say the Pledge, and my teachers would call home and yell at my parents if I tried to avoid it. Apparently you're supposed to actually be able to opt out if you want to, but nobody at that school seemed much interested in acknowledging or respecting that fact. Eventually I just started saying it so I would stop getting in trouble.

For all the Pledge lovers out there, here's a brief history:
Francis Bellamy [[1855 - 1931), a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892. He was a Christian Socialist. In his Pledge, he is expressing the ideas of his first cousin, Edward Bellamy, author of the American socialist utopian novels, Looking Backward [[1888) and Equality [[1897).

Francis Bellamy in his sermons and lectures and Edward Bellamy in his novels and articles described in detail how the middle class could create a planned economy with political, social and economic equality for all. The government would run a peace time economy similar to our present military industrial complex....
His original Pledge read as follows: 'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and [[to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' He considered placing the word, 'equality,' in his Pledge, but knew that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans. [ * 'to' added in October, 1892. ]...
In 1923 and 1924 the National Flag Conference, under the 'leadership of the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution, changed the Pledge's words, 'my Flag,' to 'the Flag of the United States of America.' Bellamy disliked this change, but his protest was ignored.

In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer.

Bellamy's granddaughter said he also would have resented this second change. He had been pressured into leaving his church in 1891 because of his socialist sermons. In his retirement in Florida, he stopped attending church because he disliked the racial bigotry he found there.

I say the pastor has the right to do whatever he wants. We are in the United States, we do have our freedoms and if the muslims attack our troops or United Nations troops I say we blast them back to the stone age, bad example most of those people are stuck in the stone age. lol

They seem to be more concerned about this case just because of the threat of violence.

From detnews.com: Good Friday mosque protest may spur unrest, prosecutors fear
The complaint claims Jones has received 300 death threats over the protest, is the target of a $1.2 million reward for his assassination from a terrorist group and told police he plans to bring a pistol to protect himself during the Friday afternoon protest at the Ford Road mosque.
The name of his church is "Dove World Outreach Center."

Well, that just proves how extemist you are. The supreme court has repeatedly disagreed with you [[thankfully) and I'm glad that there is a group of level headed people interpreting laws and not people with political views so far on the outer ends of the scale.

Americans are losing their rights because the government is giving all the
    freedoms to others.
Awww, poor middle class, middle aged white male. You're so discriminated against. All those Muslims and Mexicans daring to speak their minds. What happened to the American standard of, "I don't agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death, your right to say it."? Does that only apply when the person looks like you? I embrace the fact that Terry Jones and Westboro Baptist can say the dispicable things that they do, even as I abhor what they are saying.

You want to live in this country then you respect its' laws, and respect the
    flag.
I have the freedom to not respect the flag and there's nothing you can do about it. Sorry. Also, dissention and disobedience have long been used in this country and are quite American. I really hope that you are not trying to infer that you obey and respect every law we have in this country.

that is treason to disrespect the American flag in America, period!
No, not period. It is not treason just because you say it is. It is, in fact, not treason because people far smarter than you have ruled that it is not. If someone wants to disrespect the flag, suck it because there's not a goddamn thing you can do about it.

If you are an athiest and don't wish to participate in any religious
activities in school then leave the class if a prayer is being said or sit while
the class is standing and saying the Pledge. One person should not dictate what
the majority wants. I attended a school Christmas play put on by a bunch of 1st
graders. There was not one religious song in the entire play...why...because
the school didn't want to offend anyone. If you don't believe in Christmas or
Easter, then don't attend a Christmas play that may have a religious song in
    it.

By the same token, if you want to put on a program with religious songs, go ahead. Nobody's stopping you. I know it's a bit more difficult to actually do something instead of bitching about it on the internet but you do have the opportunity to put on the program you want. You know that right? You do realize that you had the right to not attend the godless heathen christmas program just like I don't have to attend your fairy tale program, right? If that ever happens, which I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's not.

Shit-bags like this fake pastor are just as bad as the shit-bag mullahs who spout the same bullshit about Christians.

What I don't understand is with all of the gun nuts in the USA; and all of those who believe it is their "right" to carry firearms, why shit-heels such as this fool can hold such rallies and yet no one shoots the fucker? I don't get you Americans one bit.

I guess that all the legal wrangling in Dearborn probably are geared toward preventing that stupid fucker from getting himself or others shot. I'm all for never speaking or writing his name in print again. Instead you should substitute "stupid fucker", or in terms of his church, I guess I can't even come up with anything. Thoughts?

and told police he plans to bring a pistol
Well, that should be good for an arrest since I'm reasonably sure he doesn't have a Michigan CCW permit.

I'm not making excuses for this lamebrain idiot...only stating a fact that I know about CCW permits. You're pretty quick to jump to conclusions aren't you?

Prosecutors want Terry Jones to post a "peace bond" to cover the probable cost of law enforcement out there to save his ass. Apparently he doesn't want to pay it. Fine.
Don't provide any police protection. Let him go down to the mosque and burn a Quran. Let nature take its course. Wait for some bystanders to call 911, then they can send police / EMS down to clean up the mess.

If the pastor thinks Islam is a wrong religion, then fine, preach it, write letters to the editor, etc. But I think that burning a Koran is a bad example and adds nothing to acting in love towards his enemies as his saviour asks. If he truly loves people, even his enemies then hand out tracts and witness the Gospel to the Muslims, at least if he is beaten up or killed it was because he truly cared for them, not just trying to incite them. I think that Islam is a false religion and that the truest expression of Islam as taught by their founder does lean towards waring and killing and subjecting others to Islam. Moderate Islam is much in my mind like liberal christians who have watered down who Jesus was and what he did, etc.

wasn't christ a liberal? That "turn the other cheek" stuff comes across as pretty liberal to me...maybe you old timey church types should just stick with the old testament, which is filled with all sorts of fun stuff like incest...

As for "Mexicans burning the flag in CA" I must have missed that one. It sure wasn't any of the Mexicans/Mexican Americans on my block...

If B. American volunteered to help out at any public school, he might find that the pledge of allegiance is said every day in most public schools, [[even the public schools in Los Angeles, which as we all know is a very liberal city with a huge smattering of what George W. Bush called "little brown ones").

That of course, would mean going out and seeing the world instead of sitting in his dull suburb making assumptions while posting on the internet.

There WAS however a recent assembly of teabaggists outside a mosque in Orange County [[for those of you who don't get out much, Orange County is to LA what Oakland County is to Detroit...once an all white bastion, now increasingly a melting pot..)

Anyway...here's the video. Note the chants of "go back home". Are the teabaggists telling people not to attend houses of worship? Or are they making assumptions about people's citizenship status?
They have the legal authority to do neither.
and as an earlier poster said, it's funny how much all fundamentalists sound alike...
