5 firefighters injured battling commercial building fire in Detroit

Detroit — Five firefighters were hurt early this morning when the roof and a wall of a vacant commercial building on the city's southwest side collapsed as they battled a blaze in the building.

One of them remained hospitalized at Detroit Receiving Hospital this afternoon with four broken ribs and vertebrae, Detroit fire officials said, citing preliminary information. His condition wasn't available.

The others were treated and released for either arm, hand or shoulder injuries, officials said.

A two-alarm fire in the building on South Oakwood Boulevard near Pleasant Street had crews battling the blaze about 2 a.m. today, officials said.

Officials didn't know a cause of the fire. The incident remains under investigation.
