I lived on Doyle Street, just south of McNichols on the east side of Van Dyke in 1989-90. At that point there were still a lot of houses there and a fair amount of original residents, many from Holy Name Catholic Church. I lived in the church rectory at the time to keep the place filled so it wouldnt be robbed. At the time, my brother and about 3-5 other guys lived there. Also around this time was the first wave of shuttering Detroit catholic churches, and the "expansion" of Detroit City Airport. So the neighborhood around Van Dyke and 6 was largely abandoned, and still is.
Holy Name was bought by Shield of Faith church when sold by the archdiocese. Nice people and they keep the complex well maintained. I last visited about 2-3 years ago.
