I noticed last Labor Day when I came into Detroit to visit family that there wasn't much in southern Macomb County when it came to hotels. We ended up staying at the Georgian Inn on Gratiot, which may have been one of the better bets as it has an Italian restaurant attached to the hotel. But the lay out is terrace-type units with outdoor exposures, not interior corridors, unless I missed it.

Until you get to the Little Mack and I-94 area there doesn't seem like much lodging between there and downtown. I can't think of any hotels around downtown Royal Oak.

After living in Detroit for decades in places like Corktown, I'm taking my first winter vacation in Detroit. I have a couple of places with friends or family to camp out, but I find those options at times to be a bit trying. In terms of lodging with somewhere to walk around, downtown seems about it.
