I think the point has been made that this incident had nothing to do with talk radio. The entire notion was a projection of anti-talk radio activists pushing thier beliefs onto an unrelated incident in order to push thier feelings into the mainstream. People interviewed who knew the shooter said he was not into talk radio, and he was just a nutjob.

Many folks who hear radio programs or tv shows that push an agenda or ideals different than thier own feel those with the opposing views are hate pushers, fearmongers, or worse... pushing violence and revolution through ideas that don't match thier own.
Nutjobs come in all shapes and sizes, all political wings and all religions.
In America, we have the freedom to speak out when our Government is not doing what we think is the right thing, or is diminishing our freedoms. There was no shortage of this speech during Bush II, and there is no shortage of it during Obama.

    from MoveOn.org:

    "...
Thousands of the records that should be in the background check system—people with documented histories of serious mental illness and drug abuse, like Arizona shooter Jared Lee Loughner—have never been entered.1 And you can still buy guns at gun shows with no background check at all.2
A bipartisan group of mayors from across the country, led by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is now pushing to close these loopholes..."

What documented history of serious mental illness? I have no doubt the guy was and is about as far off kilter as it's possible to be, but I've seen nothing but post-event analysis by professionals and recitations of personal feelings had by non-professionals pre-event. Even the sheriff, who admittedly is trying desperately to cover his own rear, says that Loughner's drug issue was very minor.

What took them so long? John Conyers and 15 other "House Dems call for gun hearings".

Getting kicked out of that comcol for being nuts would be one thing that should flag a "don't sell this guy a gun" notice

Oh, how? Someone is told by a community college administrator that he can't reenroll unless he gets counseling. Are you suggesting that type of decision, which may or may not be accurate, cause some governmental warning to be attached to him or his SSN that will follow him everywhere forever?

He wasn't allowed to volunteer to the seriously strained to the max military, and that wasn't red flag enough for you. He got bounced from community college, not enough. A rising din of people who knew him, just not quite scary enough. Right up to the moment he walked up to Carolyn Giffords and shot her point blank in the face. Enough for you? Isn't it time to start screaming for his government execution?

Those are the wrong questions. What's enough for me isn't the question.

The right question is what label, or tag, or identifier do you want attached to you and to follow you around for the rest of your life? And how do you want that label to be determined? If we get what you seem to be suggesting, it won't just be the Loughners of the world - it could be any of us for any inane reason [[after all, more than 25% of applicants to the military are rejected). Do you really want the anecdotal events that you describe to be sufficient for the stigma that will be attached? I think we need something far more substantial and professional.

Yes, I think the point was made BY talk radio. And, of course another point made BY talk radio. They forgot one main point - he was just a nutjob - WITH A GUN.

Anyone who can afford security, or works or lounges in a situation that has security, such as politicians, judges, CEO's, shouldn't have laws passed dis-allowing guns in their workplaces and offices. They should have to face the same risks as people on the street face day to day. These are often the same people who have pay and benefits different and better than most working class people. If they want protection from the gun nuts, they should require we have protection from crime. Okay, you can have beefed up security, but you must increase funding for our police departments. Just like congress and it's medical and retirement packages that we, the citizens, aren't allowed to have. This is another double standard favoring our ruling elite. It's terrible that anyone should get shot, but what makes it worse that a member of congress was shot?

What a fine symbol for a state. lol And as its symbol, AZ could have a pile of dead animals and a corpse with its head blown off.

Arizona vigilante leader Shawna Forde convicted of murder, home invasion
The leader of an anti-illegal-immigrant group [Minutemen American Defense] was convicted Monday in a home invasion robbery that left a 9-year-old girl and her father dead in what prosecutors said was an attempt to steal drug money to fund the group's operations.
They really are crazy down there, I tell you.
