I got that info directly from PW history. Besides the Fisher house on W. Boston Blvd what do you have?

This Cotswald Cottage style house at 2020 Chicago Blvd. has had an interesting history. In 1949 it was purchased by Ed and Mary-Agnes Davis, the second black family to live on Chicago Blvd. and the first black family to be voted into the Boston-Edison Association.

Ed Davis started his work career as a mechanic and operator of a car wash business in the early 1930s then working his way up to becoming the first black man in the US to own and operate a new car franchise for one of the Big Three.

Mary-Agnes Miller Davis is significant in her own right. She was a leading force in Detroit's old guard African-American community. She founded several social/charitable organizations that benefitted not only Detroit's elite but also the wider community.

You guys rock! Neil, South, P^9...this is awesome...keep em coming. Regarding Richard Marr...as many know on here, he is one of my favorite Detroit architects and I did a massive amount of research on his works. I even compiled a list and then dropped my external hard drive, losing everything. I had the list at well over 70 of his designs. He did a great deal of work in Oakland County and GP as well.

In Southfield and Lathrup Village one can find a great number of interesting Tudors and Colonials smack dab in the middle of 60s/moderne subdivisions. I think Clarence Day and J.Ivan Dise did a lot of these homes...

OUCH on the harddrive! Do you still have the drive? I have a fairly complete list of Marr, Day and Dise on the eastside ie Grosse Pointe, but need to do more research in southern Oakland CO. and Western Wayne CO. Here are a few more from a couple of my favorite architects in Indian Village.

    Robert O. Derrick:

    2918 Burns built in 1924
    2930 Burns built in 1924
    2942 Burns built in 1924
    2952 Burns built in 1924
444 Lodge built in 1922 Berry Historic District
360 Lodge built in 1923 Berry Historic District
1480 West Romeo Road [[32 Mile Road) built in 1927 Addison Oaks Country Park Leonard, MI.

    Herman & Simons:

    2204 Seminole built in 1918
    2224 Seminole built in 1919
    2240 Seminole built in 1920
    2921 Burns built in 1921
    2929 Burns built in 1921
    2945 Burns built in 1921
    2955 Burns built in 1921
    3030 Seminole built in 1922
19390 Canterbury built in 1924 Sherwood Forest Historic District
    2430 Burns built in 1924
    2460 Burns built in 1928

Mystery location-let's see if anyone recognizes the location.

There are supposedly 12 homes by H&S in I.V. I have found 9 if anyone knows about the other 3 I would love the information. Also all 8 homes on the 2900 block of Burns are pictured here. Its quite interesting that they were designed by just 2 firms.

In Post #175 on this thread, p69rrh51 listed and pictured 1188 Atkinson as one of Richard Marr's houses. In addition to that house, another of his very early works is several doors down at 1154 Atkinson.

Couldn't save it...totally smashed it. I haven't heard much about Herman and Simons...were they builders or actual architects?

Aloys Frank Herman and Henry Thomas Simons architects. I am guessing almost everyone on here is familiar with Herman's most famous Detroit commission Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

Oh and don't forget that Charles Platt designed a few homes in Indian Village as well. That was a huge thing to have someone like him design a home there at that time.

**Also I know IV had their "archive" in a church basement for a while and I am friends with its "historian" if you will. He even had the IV Arcadia book damn near ready to go and then I don't know what happened.

From the list I have for Indian Village which was originally prepared by Rene Sancar who was Historic Realty there is no Charles Platt home listed. All the Platt homes in MI are accounted for from a list down by the Saginaw Art Museum and there are no homes designed by him in Detroit.

    5 of his homes

1126 North Michigan built in 1903 Saginaw, MI.
The Moorings 32 Lakeshore Road built in 1910 Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.
99 Lothrop built in 1928 Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.
17315 East Jefferson built in 1927 City of Grosse Pointe, MI.
242 Provencal built 1934 Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Unfortunately a member of a well known auto family with more money than brains tore down this MAJOR historic home as well as the Miller home designed by Robert Derrick next door.

Beats me...gotta find that list somewhere. The Burton Collection has a file on Platt's work in Michigan as well, but I never coped the damn thing. It really would be pretty damn sweet if IV and PW put up a list like Sherwood Forest did with all the homes and designers listed.

Anyways, where did that one house stand in IV, that is now on Provencal in GP? It was dismantled and relocated...it's a massive Kahn Tudor on Provencal, just before the street turns private.

Yes the home is still there, the lot was split and the and carriage house was sold off. I was in the home for the Junior League Show House a few years ago you would have cried all the wood in the home had been painted. If I remember correctly it was one of the homes on the river side like the Ford mansion it was moved to make room for the apartment buildings and hotel. Lastly while the staff [[I should say understaff) is very helpful Burton has been very neglected and is not what it once was.

Yea, I would go there all the time while I was in the LIS program at Wayne, since I knew the staff. Check out the Donaldson and Meier ledgers...shows all their works listed.

776 are friends of mine and confirm that its Platt - will see if I can get where they got their info. Not sure about any others.

Anyone have an idea who did 1501 Seminole? I assumed Stratton because of its similarities to the Society of Arts and Crafts but haven't been able to confirm. Love it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/southof...57622655941678

I had thought that 7660 LaSalle might be Richard Marr but not confirmed. http://www.flickr.com/photos/southof...57626346346777
There is a great cluster of buildings just south of the park including this one by Gehrke. 7604 LaSalle Blvd, Detroit

Wondered whether 7477 LaSallemight be George Mason. http://www.flickr.com/photos/southof...57626346346777

On another note, anyone attending the Society of Architectural Historians conference in Detroit in April? There are a few sessions on Detroit. Looking forward to it!

Great great great. You guys are great.

The D&M items are terrific, I especially love the pictures of the Stott Building under construction. I started to research Detroit architecture heavily due to a good friend who is related to Henry Meier. To keep up with the IV thing, before SHG there was Grylls and Gies.

Cool I will make the changes on 776!! 1501 Seminole was design/built? by William Blay for a Frank Forbash in 1908. Looks like the original cost of the construction was $6,000

Thanks for that! William Blay - haven't come across his name yet. Know if he has done anything else in town? This one appears to have had an extra bay added on the south end according to locals - used to be about 2/3 the size.

I have not run across him either, but its a terrific home. Nice to know you are also a Gehrke fan. Here are a couple of his commissions including 7604 LaSalle

211 Arden Park built in 1914 Arden Park-East Boston Historic District
7604 LaSalle Boulevard built in 1926
26389 York built in 1928 Hill Historic District Huntington Woods, MI.

Could take this off onto a Marcus Burrowes direction but I think that has been covered already. Ah what the heck.

1710 Seminole at St. Paul keeps grabbing me - designed for Paul Gray [[Gray Motor Co) in 1910 by Marcus Burrowes. I wonder whether it had [[red) tiled roof at one point like the maintenance building on belle Isle. Would be a really good combo...
