We should change Detroit's name to Portland.
We should change Detroit's name to Portland.
Apparently, to the young hip kids in Lincoln, NE, Detroit is the new Portland.
No joke, I heard that right out of the mouth of a Lincoln-ite.
Well at least you can feel assured Detroit Texas which is several times as large [[Whoopie lol) as Detroit Oregon has no such plans. I think the Oregon town is being pretty classless. Maybe we can convince them to pick a sunny Mexican town to be named after... Ciudad Juarez!
Texas also has a Pittsburg, Boston, New Boston, [[2) Roosevelts, Iraan, Italy, China, Buffalo, Bogata, Atlanta and all sorts of other place names. Usually a settler would move to a new place and see a cow or a tree and say "that reminds me of one in Italy" and thus the name.
I swear the local newspapers scour this forum for ideas:

They sure do check out the forum:

Note the post right after mine on Charlie LeDuff was by "BShea"--who posted a link to a story in Crain's by...Bill Shea.
Not approving or dissing the action--just pointing out an example.
What are you talking about? Oregon is one of the most progressive places in the country. Bruce Campbell lives there, for God's sake. I'm more than happy to grab a Dutch Bros & hit Powell's for book browsing
Who the hell cares. I'm surprised people here are calling it "classless" and the mention in the article of "they'll be sorry in the future."
It's a city of 300 residents on the other side of the country. They can do whatever they want, and who cares about anyone's opinion.
The literal meaning of Detroit doesn't even apply to them, their reasons for the change are even more justified.
