Detroit sees rise in white residents after 60 years

A stunning demographic reversal is taking shape in Detroit.

After six decades of white flight, the percentage of white Detroiters has shot up dramatically, according to a new census survey released Tuesday.

The survey, more estimate than precise numbers, shows that the percentage of white, non-Hispanic Detroiters rose from 8.4% of the city's population in 2008 to 13.3% last year.

Much of the rise can be pegged to younger white people -- along with some empty nesters -- moving to the city, even as African Americans continue to leave for the suburbs.

"What we're seeing is a move back to the city by a younger population that sees the city as cool," said Kurt Metzger, director of Data Driven Detroit.

More white residents moving in or fewer white residents moving out?

I agree, there are many white people living in the suburbs of metro Detroit who in my opinion, are some of the most racist white people in the country, who want the city of Detroit to die simply for no reason than the large black pop. These people don't like to see an improved city government [[Bing) they love Young and Kilpatrick because it gives them a warm fuzzy feeling to have those people in office. Pathetic assholes!

I'm not going to argue with the fact that there are some "racist white people in the country, who want the city of Detroit to die simply for no reason than the large black population."

But how exactly do you explain the nearly 200,000 blacks who also don't want anything to do with Detroit as of the last decade? Are they also racists who want to see Detroit die just because it's a city with a large black population. Are they also "pathetic assholes" as well?

Where are these people? I've never talked to a single white person that doesn't wish for Detroit to become a better place.

My co-worker was very upset when he saw this article.

Anyhow, if only two people live in an area it only takes one more to move there to show a 50% increase in population. I'm just saying to illustrate that the lower the population the less increase it takes to make a dramatic increase "percentage" wise.
