I have always worked for the people of the state, but those jobs are getting scarcer as money becomes less available. It wouldn't hurt to take the federal, state and city civil service exams, something might come up and surprise you.

Despite graduating in the middle of the pack from a middle-tier law school in 2008, I miraculously got an attorney job in the extremely depressed legal market. In metro Detroit. But I wouldn't recommend law school.

I hear ruin porn is where the big bucks are in photography. Just tell your relatives you do "architectural" photography for "amateur enthusiasts with deep pockets." You're in the right place after all!

film industry & photography. For the record cloud_wall, I make very little money on my "ruin porn"; the money is in photographing events, weddings, and functions.

Got my BS in Computer Science from U of M - Dearborn in 1982. I currently write medical billing software for a small, local billing company. Worked with mainframes for my first 19 years, first programming, then doing mainframe performance and tuning, then got laid off from EDS a few years back [[hired into GM originally - I actually thought I'd work there til I retired! what a thought that is these days). Been working in the client/server world since I started with the billing thing. The way things are these days, I'm just happy to have a job that pays all the bills and a little more.

Went to school for architecture for undergrad...sensed things were getting unsteady in the job market so I immediately went to school for planning. Ironically a few months after graduation, I got an architecture job, though the company does a lot of urban design stuff which is perfect.

Sense of humor is rampant in this thread.

Spent the last 20 years doing almost everything software related. Since your degree will be in photography, be sure to gain experience with graphics technology. Keep up on the trades and organizations also. Join industry forums and bring something to offer. Networking among your peers remains a powerful tool. Don't be apprehensive to branch out into related fields and technologies. Always learn and be creative. Have fun.

    I work in medical coding.

It's a little known field with high demand - yes, even in Michigan! Here's a good site for further information.

I am a very disgruntled retail worker with a lot of shoulda coulda wouldas! I currently work full time for a retail chain-pay is decent upper teens but I pay 40 a week for health insurance that has a high co-pay and deductibles, and a part time job I work at night and one of my days off. Never collected an unemployment check-always got out and hustled made my way but didnt take advantage of advancement opportunities and never had the self discipline to stay in college although I did well when I applied myself. My wife has a degree in Journalism and is going for a masters in psychology, she will make the big bucks...
