Data analyst/auditor for a 3PL in detroit. I get to work in an old mansion on e Jefferson which is pretty much the most awesome building I've ever worked in. My job is both boring and interesting at the same time, but only because I'm a nerd.

My true calling in life is to be a chef, but I just can't seem to convince myself to quit my job to go to culinary school....so I cook for my family and close friends....

I still go to school, though not culinary school. When I'm not working full time or doing the family thing, I go to WSU full time to finish up my bachelor's in Global Supply Chain Management. woo!

SMRJim and Maxine1958, I also have a 3GL background. Never did much directly with AS400 though. Mostly IBM370 or 3230. I coded COBOL, RPG, PLI, IMS, and DB2 on the frame for a few years until about 1997. That is when I got off the frame in favor of what used to be called client-server computing.

Not that this has anything to do with this thread, but I think some of my brothers may have gone to Vetal for a very short period, back in 1958-1959. My parents moved to Detroit from NY in 58, lived on Glastonbury near Schoolcraft initially, then moved to a bigger home on Prevost near Grand River in 59 [[6 kids at the time with #7, me, on the way). I think my bros may have gone to Vetal while they were on Glastonbury - wasn't that somewhere over in that neighborhood? Or am I mixing it up with another school?

Anyway, good to see another old-time mainframer [[are there any other kind?) here. I may be the short-timer, with 'only' 28 years in IT, though I also moved to the other [['client-server') side in 2004. Started out on an HP-3000 when I worked at U-M Dearborn on my co-op job there, in the pre-PC days. Typing up those punch cards for my school classes sure was fun back then.

If you didn't want people asking, you should have just said an old friend. Identifying them as an ex friend is just asking for inquiries. Inquiries like, was it an old flame? Betrayal by a trusted friend? Just what kind of salacious story is behind someone becoming an ex friend?

I am currently a Lecturer at a local university, teaching HR courses. I have the summer off this summer, too!

I am a retired skilled tradesman from one of the Big 3, that is how I can afford to work as a Lecturer.

I have also been a union president, union organizer, research assistant, flight instructor, shift manager at a pinball joint, wood cutter, cook, dishwater, busboy, and envelope stuffer.

I used to design and program machines within 5/10,000 of an inch. Now, I can't get a job at a gas station.

I used to measure gears and components, sometimes to within 1/10,000 inch, except for balance shaft gears for reducing vibration in four cylinder engines. On those, we measured involutes [[shape of gear tooth) in microns.
Last week, I patched asphalt parking lots and driveways and slung bundles of shingles. Today and tomorrow, washing, rubbing out and waxing boats. This stuff was a lot easier 40 years ago.
Unemployment compensation ran out last month and I cannot find a regular job with benefits, etc....
This makes the recession of the early 1980s look mild!

Greetings. Long time lurker, first time poster. I am graduating from Wayne State in December and am beginning to enter freak out mode in terms of what the hell I am going to do post college. I'd like to live in the city and continue my love affair with Detroit but I have no idea what I am going to do for work. My degree is in photography and the last I heard the news and freep aren't doing so well. haha.

So what does everyone on this board do for work? What city do you work in? Did you go to college for one thing and end up doing something else?
