I'm with you Bartock. In Savannah they have some moronic excuse to completely stop all east-west traffic at least every 2 or three months. And nothing so cool as the Dream Cruise, either. It's some group of morons running through the streets or riding bicycles or marching or dancing. How did the city survive for 300 years without tourists?

NO NO NO. I'm not saying they moved out because of the Dream Cruise. They moved for the typical reason of a better job out of state. At first, they enjoyed it, watched it from their yard, had parties around it. But as time went on, it got to be quite bothersome. The campers were the last straw that turned their sentiments into hating it.

NO NO NO. They didn't move out because of the Dream Cruise. They moved for the typical reason of a better job out of state. I don't know where you are in Ferndale, but they were the second house off Woodward.

I drove up Woodward from WSU to Ferndale yesterday around 6 and saw zero cruisers. I was disappointed. But at least I looked good in my torch red Mustang convertible :-)

I live in Ferndale, a block from Woodward, and work in Detroit, on Woodward. As you might guess, I drive Woodward daily. Every year I dread the Dream Cruise. I mean, I get it, and wouldn't begrudge the gearheads their one day. Woodward Avenue is, after all, the first paved highway in America and should be part of this celebration of the automobile, but it is no longer one day and it is not confined to just Woodward.

Last year I planned ahead, or so I thought, and took I-75 home from work. Shoulda been simple . . .I-75N to I-696W exit at Bermuda/Mohawk and double back to southbound Hilton. No problem, right? Wrong! Cops had all the exits to I-696 closed all the way to Evergreen. [[This was around 11pm, I'm sure they couldn't do this all day.) While I am not quite as bitter and angry as I was that day, I can still remember the sound of the blood rushing to my head and through my ears. Though I have never been a big booster of the event I was tolerant and understanding until that day.

Now I despise the Dream Cruise. I have had a recurring dream since the beginning of August. In the dream I wake on the morning of the cruise because of noise from my garage. In a t-shirt and boxers and slippers, I go to investigate. The garage door is open and Mr. T is beckoning. [[He is the old-school Mr. T from my lunch box when I was a kid.) Inside the garage is a Yugo, but not just any Yugo. It has been A-Teamed! by Mr. T. It's even been painted black with a red swoosh! So far, I wake before any real satisfaction, but I have started looking for a Yugo on Craigslist.

I tried to go to the Kroger at 13 and Woodward yesterday [[Monday 8/16) at 2pm. FOR GET IT!! They were everywhere. No parking. And it's not just there. All along Woodward people have these old cars backed in, hoods up, and they sit in folding chairs in front of them, drinking something. It's Tuesday. Dream Cruise is Saturday. WTF!

The Dream Cruise is a more of a nightmare than a dream, if you happened to be unintentional caught in it. Or even if you come by choice, you might find yourself struggling for air. The smog is so intense, I'm surprised authorities don't issue a air-quality warning for the Woodward corridor suburbs. I also wonder how much gas is wasted on this event, as some "cruisers" waste all day driving on Woodward boulevard. All in all, this event is a celebration of suburban and consumer excess, a glorification of America's suicidal way of life. To challenge it, especially in Metro Detroit, is bordering on treason.

How does anybody "unintentional" get caught in it?

By your logic, we ought to demand or better yet by proclamation close all movies theaters, museums and sports stadiums because everybody going is wasting gas.

My compliant is: why do the complainers exaggerate so much?

I'm no dream cruise fan but your characterization of the fans as "Lurleen & Cletus" is rather crude. What would you say if someone called attendees of a Detroit event "Bonequita & Darnell" and said "Don't forget to brush your gold tooth". Stereotypes are wrong. Period.

Whoa. I may be severely lacking in the cojones dept, but I never understood what's so exciting about the combination of women and cars. I mean, women, I get, women are an exciting bunch. What was I talking about? Oh yeah. But what are those cars doing there? Why not women and some computer equipment, or a woman and a salad bar?
Must be the same deficiency that causes me to leisurely amble about street fairs without my piece firmly holstered to my hip. I will have to try harder.

Eh, it's different down there. WAY different. They like cars too though.

Check out the blinged-out bicycles. That's way different.

I don't know about the salad bar, but man can she compress some data reels.

Its been 9 years since I parked my Camaro. I had simple plans, instal the roll cage, build a faster engine, and get it back on the road. When I moved to Detroit, priorities changed, and the car continued to sit. Still, I've only missed the first year of the cruise, eben if I lacked a nostalgic ride, I went and watched.

This year marks the return of my Camaro, and around 700 hp strong I might add. With the help of my dad, we've worked diligently to get her ready for the cruise. Tonight I took a 40 mile trip, checking for leaks or problems. Everything seems up to par and ready for Woodward. I'll be the guy in the Plymouth Prowler Purple 69 Camaro that's loud as hell.

Hey, SS!! We'll keep an eye out for you!!

I'm looking forward to another thoroughly enjoyable Dream Cruise!!! After walking the 13-to-14-Mile route several evenings this week, I'll be out and about today, checking on what's being set up, attending the Lights & SIrens Cruise in Ferndale and the Berkley Car Parade. Tomorrow morning we'll take our traditional cruise of the entire Cruise route from the State Fair Grounds to "The Loop" in Pontiac and back. Then we hit the pavement walking a few miles to see the parked classics up close!!

To those planning to attend as a participant or a spectator...
    Cheers!! Have a great time!!

    Kathleen,

I'm going to try and park at the CVS. Once I get up there, I'll likely be parked for the day. I'm not gonna chance any problems sitting in bumper to bumper traffic with my fresh engine.

    Kathleen,

I'll be at the park at Woodward/13 mile tomorrow.

Attention: It is the year 2010. You know what is REALLY cool? Mass transit.Ever been on the Metro in Paris? Now that is awesome. You can transverse city and suburb alike while reading a free newspaper or talking to someone.

And you know what blows? A bunch of beer-bellied Viagra-fueled old fucks with their old jalopies sitting in traffic in the suburbs.

In so many horrible ways, Metro Detroit is stuck in middle of the 20th century. Yet people wonder why it sucks so bad here.

DetroitPole, I hear you. Not that they haven't had their riots in [[metro) Paris, but I'll bet the Metro even contributes to making the joint feel lees f[[r)actionalized. That whole talking to someone bit, occupying the same space as everybody else. But don't you think they would still have the Dream Cruise, even if [[metro) Detroit had an excellent public transportation system? They still trot out their old-timers, of the human variety, for whatever WWII-related celebrations they have in France, even though they're super-firmly ensconced in the EU together with Germany and so it's arguably a little dated. Same with the Dream Cruise, I would think.

The Dream Cruise is not my cup of tea, really, and I have made no secret of my opinion that putting in some intelligent mass transit is a no brainer, but I hope you Dream Cruisers have a nice time and enjoy yourselves!

Congrats to SuperSport for getting their Camaro ship-shape in time. Keep on tinkering, friend.

    You're being awfully judgemental there.

The dream cruise is not at all my kind of thing. But you know what also blows? Being amongst a bunch of malt liquor and marijuana fueled young thugs with their Escalades with 28" wheels and boom boom speakers stuck in traffic on E. Jefferson near Belle Isle in Detroit on a Saturday night.

Stereotypes are not nice, are they?

How many of you grew up in the muscle car era ? In the day Woodward Ave. was in all the major car mags coming out of California . And this Dream Cruise has not only been in the National spotlight , but International as well . This is good press for an area that rarely gets good press . I grew up in Ferndale/Birmingham during this era , and I had a great time and see nothing wrong with this event .

I know there's really no comparison to the joy & hatred that the Woodward Dream Cruise evokes with people but the closest event that is this celebrated and disruptive in the SE Michigan area I can think of is the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Both events the streets are blocked off, throngs of people are there, lousy parking, and it's pretty much a pain in the butt to the locals that don't participate. Both events started off meager and now have grown to epic proportions.

The only difference I've noticed is that the A2 Art Fair doesn't have an obligatory thread to vent. There are some seriously cheesed off people about the Dream Cruise compared to the Art Fair.
