It was the upper stories of the mid-rise portion, not the tower. They were construction lamps, not the typical fluorescent lighting.

Yes, and those from Flint I'm going to really worry about what they think. So, come here for the building porn, do you?

I'm busy living my life in the veritable shadow of the place. I love how, just like in real life, everyone who doesn't even work down here or invest down here has all kinds of opinions about what we should do and of course knows more than those of us who are living/spending/working/playing/worshipping/etc.

Look, I really appreciate the interest in the city. But it's misplaced. We're people, not buildings. We're a community, not an urban planning experiment. Sooner some people realize that, the better.

Big Monica Conyers fan I see. Fine don't elaborate. I was just asking a fucking question. No wonder people in the suburbs don't want to help you guys.

Wolverine, that was a ridiculous reply. You should only want to here something if it's true. We've had enough bullshitting on the board, and from people that claim to know intimately or being on the inside, to boot, to be well within our rights of being something more than skeptical and surly. I take the view to 'hope but verify'. I'd hope anyone with any level of intellectual curiosity wouldn't settle for being told what could be sweet, little lies. If you don't want to verify, that's fine by me, but don't lecture us on being skeptical or rude. Really, you've been around here long enough to know that we're not going to let you get away with that silliness.

How long has it been since Book Tower was at least 25% occupied?

It's an online message board. If you are commanding pure facts out of DetroitYES, you are asking for way too much. There's plenty of other threads you can pull the b.s. card on. If DV says he's heard of potential progress, that's absolutely fine. Don't trust him? Then why ask for more details?

I know they were supposed to be pumping out the basement [[or sub-basement) in the tower. Maybe that's the work that is being referred to?
Guess who I got a threatening message from???

I wish those were my words. I made a less slamming comment on a video of theirs on YouTube where they're laying waste to the Wurlitzer Building and he threatened to "kick my ass." Ha. Right. I'd love to tie 'em up in a building they've destroyed when it has to be demolished cuz of schittheads like them.

My reply was to DetroitDad. Sorry that I didn't quote him for you. Again, you can go elsewhere and lecture people. We've heard enough baseless claims of this-or-that soon to be renovated for it not to be questioned. If you don't like the questions, than that's your problem and your problem, alone.

As a newcomer to the forum, I'm kind of an outsider to this conversation. So take everything I say with a grain of salt. A couple observations:

I'm saddened by the tone of this thread. Good communication requires that you assume the best of people. Anyone could be lying or manipulating at any time, but you're not going to find out if they are by confronting them. Over time, you figure out who's unreliable. Unless you want to destroy all good feeling in the conversation, keep it to yourself.

Aggression on an internet forum is cowardly -- you're hiding behind a keyboard.

This forum has the potential to make a lot of things happen for Detroit. But it needs to be a safe atmosphere first, a place where people can believe in something without being mocked.

And please, don't accuse me of "lecturing" you. Just read what I wrote, and if it's worthless, ignore it.

DetroitYES - Creating the impression that cheap conversation on a forum by the International Family of Communities surrounding the Straits of Detroit[[aka suburbs) and whimsical commentary by a suburban painter is making a difference. Detroit RISES!

I wasn't connecting the Book Tower and Cobo with my statement if you look at the portion of the quote that I made bold you will see what I was referring to.

I still don't see how what digitalvision said has anything to do with the attitude displayed by Monica Conyers; I guess she's just a convenient scapegoat to use with the kneejerk suburban defensiveness that comes into play any time someone dares suggest that no matter how much they want to control a municipality they don't live in, suburbanites cannot control what happens to the city their grandparents and great-grandparents built.

I don't like Monica Conyers or agree with anything she says, but I still feel that if you want a say in what happens to Detroit you need to do something other than come to a baseball game once in awhile or post to a powerless internet message board or drive around taking taking pictures of the "fabulous ruins" from your car windows. Monica wants to deny suburbanites a seat at the table because that will erode her power. I agree with digitalvision and I personally would love to see more suburbanites come to the table by moving into Detroit. I love that people are passionate about our city, but it's frustrating when so many passionate people choose to sleep in places like Huntington Woods or Madison Heights or wherever. I mean, who can be passionate about Huntington Woods or Madison Heights?

I can understand how frustrating it must be to have passion for the city but also be powerless to do anything about it. Just remember though that there are those of us who HAVE chosen to live here and we get frustrated when we see people who share our passion for Detroit but choose not to live here. We deal with all the "excuses" you give for not living here and we still love it.

My sentiments exactly, thank you Dexterferry.

Monica is an embarrassment - and because she's visible, she's the lightning rod and of course, all people must be a certain way. After all, when you cross 8 mile, didn't you know that you lose all comprehensive thought or ability to compromise? ;-)

The takeaway is that when it comes to Detroit, the attitude of most coming to city citizens is not of compromise, it's of "We know better." It's a common trait, you're not alone. Because you actually have so little real experience, you rely on the television snooze to tell you what the city is like, or what the people are.

I'm usually not so upset about shit like this, but really, it's insulting. Not just to me, but I think about the numerous people I care about who are devoting their lives through their decisions of lifestyles and vocations when they could be making way more money or have other opportunities, to make this a better place. They're making it happen.

First, Who the fuck said I wanted a say what happens in Detroit? I just asked for someone to elaborate on what was going on with the Book. Are you guys really this defensive or do you just have shit in your ears and make up what you want to hear. I was comparing the fact that he said that because I do not live in the city limits of Detroit I am not allowed to give a shit. That is pretty much what your girl Mon Con said on several occaisions.

Second, I live in the City of Flint, which is pretty much in the same boat as Detroit and not a suburb of it, so believe it or not we are on the same side here. But unlike your myopic view I welcome help from our suburbs and love it when someone from Grand Blanc [[or one of our other suburbs) steps up and renovates a building downtown. If they have an idea that will make something better here I say, "Hey that's a good idea." not, "shut up we don't need your help, even though our city is falling apart and the last several decades we have continued wallow in our collective shit." I don't say that because I am an adult and adults can swallow their pride and don't act like spoiled children.

Third, I choose to live in Flint for the same reasons as you do in Detroit. I grew up here my family is here, I love it here. I love the history that is here in Flint, we are the birthplace of General Motors [[which you stole from us, by the way, but I am willing to put that behind us). You see, I am able to multi task and have interest in more than one city at the same time.

They could probably only prosecute on vandalism charges. The trespassing, not so much.

I drove by around lunchtime today and saw a truck there fueling up the generator in the alley behind. The building looked secure from my view, but things are starting to look worse..... overall very dirty and trash collecting in the recessed entries.

I know who runs it. And I don't understand why you're so angry and hateful. If you don't like the site, go to another website, move on. It's like bitching about a program on TV you don't like... turn the channel moron.

And I got a challenge for you, find a building owner who will give enough of a shit to waste their time prosecuting someone over a misdemeanor trespassing charge.

No, but vandalism and destruction of property are no laughing matter. And what do you know, they videotaped the actions, so they can't try to defend their actions. You drive in from Northville lately to bust up a few windows? Maybe throw a chair or filing cabinet down an elevator shaft??? Funny, I forgot to note down in my give a shit log when you thought malicious destruction of others belongings became something you could do for amusement, I hope that nothing like this ever befalls a home, or a vehicle you own. Probably wouldn't seem nearly as funny, unless of course, the perpetrator video-taped it and put it on lookidostupidshittopeoplesproperty.com

Typical idiot comment from those who think Detroit's their playground to abuse and trash for their own amusement. It's attitudes like this that have led Detroit to where it is today.
