What's with outrageously expensive restaurants locating downtown? Really, that's nice and all, but I don't see regular Detroiters ever being able to go to this place, Coach Insignia, Mosaic, Roast, etc. Haven't they been watching the trends lately? Detroit Seafood, Sweet Georgia Brown, and more are just the latest in a string of overly-expensive restaurants that struggled to stay open and eventually closed.

If a restaurant wants to be successful here, try giving us a comfortable atmosphere, cheap to moderately-priced eats, and a general 'good vibe'. Enough of this $40-a-plate crap.

Because I guess that the rents they charge doesn't cover what an Olive Garden or Ponderosa brings in nightly. It's a destination. Same as the casino restaurants.

Actually, I believe Detroit Fish Market closed not because it wasn't profitable, but because the owner wasn't paying his taxes or something of that nature. Further proof of that is that the restaurant is reopening this week under new ownership! I think Sweet Georgia Brown also closed because of some shady business practices, not because it wasn't making money. Same with The Woodward, Seldom Blues, Detroit Breakfast House, etc.

I think the concentration of upscale dining downtown makes perfect sense, actually. Downtown should be where folks from the city or suburbs go for a special occasion dinner. You know, it's a birthday/anniversary/graduation, so tonight we're going downtown and not just to the usual neighborhood place. But at the same time, there are also plenty of casual dining options, too. I mean, we just had Rub and that other BBQ place in Greektown and Five Guys open recently. among others.

Yep Yep Yep. Keep 'em comin.

Also, Good Ole Cafe recently opened on the corner of Gratiot and Broadway, a couples of Tim Horton's just opened. A hot dog place in the old Girl Girls spot, and the Five and Ten bar is serving food now. Shield's pizza is on the way for Grand Circus. And a Mediterranean place is slated to open in August on Monroe. There are probably others. As long as there is a mix of expensive places and normal places, I will be satisfied. I totally agree on Downtown being a destination for fine/expensive dining. But if that is all there is, I'd have a problem. But clearly, there are many affordable places opening as well.

What we desperately need is an Indian place!!!!!!

Has anyone heard about or been to "Hotel D'mongo." I believe it is located on Washington Blvd. Its not the speakeasy...its a separate restaurant...owner of both is Larry D'mongo. It appears to be open as of now.
