Another Foreign Oil Company Springs a Leak

    US Companies : 0
    Foreign Companies : 2

China's largest reported oil spill more than doubled in size to 165 square miles by Wednesday, forcing nearby beaches to close and prompting one official to warn of a "severe threat" to sea life and water quality.

In this photo released by Greenpeace, a firefighter submerged in thick oil during an attempt to fix an underwater pump is brought ashore by his colleagues in Dalian, China on Tuesday.

    Meanwhile....

Congress is considering at least $80 billion in new taxes on the oil and natural gas industry, as proposed in President Obama’s fiscal year 2011 budget and in other legislation.
America needs energy policies that help grow our economy, encourage innovation and create jobs. Raising taxes, particularly as the economy is trying to recover from a deep recession, is not the way to achieve these critical goals. Instead, higher energy taxes could reduce production and increase costs, placing the burden on hard-working Americans and their families

Now, wasn't reduction of American dependance on foreign oil one of Obama's promises?

Oh yeah. It was. Oh well. There goes another one.

Want to talk "family values"? Check your family's heating bill in January 2012 and compare it to your heating bill in January 2009. But don't feel bad when you see how much it's gone up. Don't forget, you're supposed to feel evil guilt for having the audacity to want to keep you and your family from freezing to death.

All we see coming out of Washington is a pending bailout for BP, increases in domestic oil production taxation and penalties, rewards and programs designed to boost foreign energy production, and higher energy costs for average Americans.
And it's not just one party behind it, it's both of them.

From politfact.com truth-o-meter promise rated in the works and not as you implied a broken promise

"So, Obama has made some important headway on this promise. But we're still not sure how these new rules will impact how much people pay for gas. Furthermore, some of Obama's other initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels aren't finished yet. As a result, we'll be leaving this promise at In the Works for now"

    KEY POINT HERE:
"some of Obama's other initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels aren't finished yet."
So far, the track record and actions for meeting these goals indicate a switch to "green" energy, such as overpriced Solar, Wind and other sources, through the overtaxation of existing energy producers. The more you choke domestic oil, coal, and natural gas energy providers, while rewarding Solar, Wind, and other "Green" sources, the more you will force the switch. Unfortunatley, making the US completely reliant on "Green" energy will take decades [[at a minimum), which means during the transfer, the American people who are still using traditional energy will be paying through the nose.

Thats what happens when you delay/defer changes in energy policy that we need to make. Politicans like CEO's deals with the short term. A long term vision while needed and will make us better off in the long term does cause short term pain, which is not good for either elections or quarterly statements. As a culture we are now! now! now! We have a 24 hr news cycle, we want Obama to get us out of a mess that was almost 30 years in the making by next week.

When politicans are faced with the choice of short term comfort that will come back to bite us over time, or short term pain leading to long term comfort guess which wins out.
