Are you functionally illiterate? Read the threads, we've discussed this back and forth. There have been complaints, ideas and discussion on all sides. This is my final, frustrated, sarcastic cry related to the matter.

By the way, MSUguy, excellent command of the English language. Especially that first sentence. Utterly majestic writing; it pops like Champagne. :P

I willl bet that this is not the last word from you. You would do everyone else a favor if it was though. I love the functionally illiterate comment though. The complaints, et al, are mostly from you.

Well, you can't win them all, can you? I made my points, and enjoyed participating in the discussion. I was the most vocal opponent on these threads, but hardly alone.

I see your vision of how an issue should be hammered out clearly, now, though, thanks to your remarks. Everybody should just get on board with the program. Do everybody a favor and hold your tongue if you disagree.

What a shabby, pointless world that would be.

Thanks for your input, though, "Vox."

But name calling and crass, baseless posts are appropriate? Lovely.Let me chime in on the 1300 discussion. I would be willing to bet that 1300 will remain as a empy shell waiting for redevelopment for years to come. So no worries, until you find a way to develop it. I will be waiting for that to happen.

That is a damned lie, Vox. You will note I did not call anybody any names in this thread. I have pointed out appropriate problems with the plan and have handled myself with my usual amount of decorum -- which sometimes involves sarcasm, but hardly outright crassness.

And I think I should remind everybody that, when debating the merits of a particular plan, it isn't enough to say of a detractor: Why just tear down? Why not build up? What's your solution?

This is a clumsy attempt to deflect from the real argument -- the merits of the plan -- and to try to place the onus on the detractor. Sometimes a plan is so ill-advised it just needs to be dumped.

The remoteness of the station was never discussed when the MCS was a contender...

For folks prematurely saying ADIOS.... lets wait and see what happens... the News mentioned a few weeks ago that developers were interested in 1300 Beaubien... due to the proximity of Greektown. And as for the Fire HQ... it'll be a while before they move out...

Yes 1300 Beaubien is a dump... due to the fact that it has never been maintained or upgraded. Gut it down to the bare walls and power wash the exterior... and it can be a gem again...

Well looking at 1300 from a practical standpoint, there is no real adaptave reuse besides an office or some kind of loft construction, But like jcole said, the place is a dump. and pouring cold hard cash into a failing building is counterproductive, especially if you do not have the cash. So, I for one applaud the move as one that will bring some stability to the department. maybe they will leave it as bait for the urbex types.

I know, I know. DPD can't indefinitely keep using 1300. But that's a different argument from approving of the MGM site for reuse. I know we've disagreed on this, but thanks for being classy about it, Gistok.

I hear Ilitch wants it so he can tear it down and make a parking lot for the Super Bowl.

The old casino isn't really all that remote. If you have a car, it is easy to get to. If you don't, it is closer to the Transit Center than the existing HQ.

I sure hope they do it right, and give it a nice, well-lit, welcoming pedestrian entrance close as possible to the RPTC.

And for those that just don't like the former MGM building... get over it....
You're right bidding adieu to 1300 is premature. It needs to be allowed to sit empty and unsecured for about 35 years before it's torn town due to a unspecified "emergency" reason.

The only saving grace for this building is that it continues to be used for law enforcement in some capacity. Otherwise a purpose built police station, needing 100s of millions of renovations, sitting in the shadow of a jail tower and court building isn't exactly a desirable locale for a loft. not in a town with virtually unlimited land available.

Not even 35 years. I give it 4 to 5 years before it's "damaged beyond repair".

Agreed. At best it would be renovated for law offices or some other type of government facility. But I doubt anyone wants to live in an apartment building that is connected to the Wayne County jail...

Even with how things work in Detroit, if anyone seriously believes that the city is going to leave up 1300 Beaubien to rot for more than a few years so close to the heart of Greektown, they are crazy. I give this thing a year or two on the market. If it's not sold and secured by then, it's gone.

Didn't the Feds mandate that DPD build a jail to house individuals taken into custody? If that requirement hasn't been met then could this site be renovated to fulfill that requirement?

I hope the upgrades includes computerizing all of their records, having proper 21st century equipment instead of a bunch of 20-year+ outdated equipment.. They should seek out corporate donations like when the Ilitch Foundation donated those handheld metal detectors..

There is a small alleyway between the two buildings. From what I remember gutting it is about the only option. think of lofts with gas pumps on the south side, a lock up on the 10th floor, make that the social room.

Seriously, where is Fire Headquarters located? The building across from Cobo is closed I believe.

That's the right building. Worked there for years. Now it's close to empty aside from Chiefs and Commissioners. I wonder who would buy that place once they move out. Its in pretty good shape.
