LOL, now you're revealing why they had to make those fade away, couldn't allow the populace to stumble upon the CIA's MK-Ultra mind-control broadcasting in the blanking interval.Although I do remember one TV that also had a horizontal hold. That never had much effect on the picture though.
I used to try to get the horizontal hold balanced so the black bar stayed in the middle of the screen. There was binary data hidden near that bar. It always had a counter of some sort clicking away in binary. Totally tubular!
Still don't know how they do it with fixed-pixel displays...it took me thirty years to understand how it's done with scanning Cathode Ray Tubes!
I think we all need to watch, "They Live" a few times, without commercial interruption of course! LOL

Being very interested in history, my favorite recent miniseries has to be The Tudors... [[now in it's 4th and final season on Showtime)...
Showtime took the story of Henry VIII and his 6 wives and gave it a modern soap opera sexy twist that appeals to younger [[as well as older audiences)....
