I got lost this morning taking a route to avoid traffic on 75 ..found Gratiot and stubbled upon this building. I find it amazing that such a pretty building could not have a purpose in our city and would just sit empty. I am intrigued by it and wondering if anyone knows what it was

Its the building on the corner of Dubois and Hunt with the flag pole in front of it..
I believe the address is correct 2206 Hunt

was this a police station or something like that?

looks like maybe this was recently a business called Federal Process Center

There were 2 Gratiot Ave. Precinct Stations... the 3rd [[which is the topic of this discussion), and the old 15th, which was farther north along Gratiot near City Airport. The 15th used to be the station for much of the far east side, until the very distant 5th Precinct on Jefferson/St. Jean took over.

There was an older, gaslight era station on the ne corner of Russell and Gratiot built in 1873. I haven't checked, but I suppose it's long gone.

Did you recently move here from somewhere else? Pretty buildings nobody knows what to do with is pretty much all we have in Detroit. It's unfortunate, wasteful, and kind of messed up, but amazing is one thing it most assuredly isn't.

I 've lived in Detroit all my life and rarely make it to the east side, but was there on this past Sat. and saw that same building for the first time. We were walking, so I was able to read the inscriptions on the stones and confirmed it was a police station. Very nice on the outside, looks like there may have been a law office in there at one time too.

I realized this is the building I see everytime I drive to Wayne down E. Vernor. It's very very beautiful. Would be great for mixed use.

great info...I want to get a closer look tonight but the building appears to be in excellent condition for something so old and so long ago abandoned

Was there a death in the force? The flag is flying half-mast. Also nice to know that the flagpole is indeed an original feature there. In Google streetview the place was still occupied. Old Glory was in top.
From the general appearance it looks like it's been well maintained, although the balcony above the front entrance has disappeared.

This is also quite rare. This very building has it's own wikipedia page! It was added to the NRHP in 1980! So the claim by the seller that this is a historic building is valid.

It was designted as the Third Precinct from around 1897 until 1954 when it closed. Known as the Hunt Street Station, it covered about ten square miles of Detroit turf on the lower east side. In 1959, the area was merged with the Seventh Precinct, which was housed on Chene street, and later replaced by a new building. The Hunt Street Station was built in 1897 at a cost of $25,965.00. In addition to housing the precinct, the third floor became the first police training school in the United States. It had originally been intended to be used as a dormitory for personnel, as officers of the era worked 12-hour shifts. Total personnel assigned t the station of those Victorian days consisted of 36 officers.

Interstingly, when the station was first opened, it was known as the Second Precinct, until a re-alignment of precincts took place in 1910, when it then became the Third Precinct.

Looked 'er over from the outside a few times, but no, I've never been inside. I have been inside the old Eighth Precinct station at Grand River and 12th.....er....whatever that street is now...Rosa Parks?.......and I can tell you that the world's largest pigeon nest was in the attic when I was there.

EDWARD C. VAN LEYEN

Edward Van Leyen was the architect...never even heard of him before this but that building is a masterpiece. Maybe someone can buy it, tear it down, and place a liquor and porn shop on the site?
