City of Allen Park says Unity Studios defaults on lease contract

By Daniel Duggan

The city of Allen Park has issued a notice which may start the eviction process for film company Unity Studios to be forced out of the Allen Park Studio Complex for not paying its rent.

In a statement released by the city, Mayor Gary Burtka said the studio operation has defaulted on its lease contract for space.

The city issued the studio a “Notice to Quit,” which could lead — if a resolution is not reached — to the eviction of Unity Studios from the complex.

Burtka said Unity has been late in rent and other payments to the city, that it defaulted on the lease contract by failing to file financial documents, such as balance sheets, profit and loss statements and payroll records. Burtka also said Unity did not demonstrate the financial condition of the company.

Unity Studios is majority owned and operated by a group of investors from Los Angeles and Michigan, including Hollywood executive Jimmy Lifton. Originally from Southfield, Lifton has been in the entertainment business for 30 years.
