I was commenting on your soliloquy that lamented the "haves" beating up on the "have-nots."

I simply see this as one more step in removing nasty sh*t from the air that the [[80 percent) majority breathes.

Oh, I see. You're all pissed off because you think I want you to smoke or because I smoke or because I think there should be smoking in bars. Aren't you going off a little ... half-cocked? Seems you don't really know what my opinions are, other than what I've said.

And just how WOULD I know what your opinions are, other than going by what you've said? That's usually how one gauges others' opinions: consider what the other person says.

Yes, but I didn't say you needed to smoke, or say that smoking is cool, or anything like that. I don't understand where you get that. I'm trying to make a point about who makes the rules, what sort of class dynamics play into that, and how, in the rush to outlaw public smoking, we haven't created the most sensible law. Where in that do you presume I demanded that you smoke a cigarette to, as you say, "keep it real"? Please help me to understand.

Good. I hope he does ignore it. It's a stupid law.

And do you disagree that the issue of public smoking has often been framed in a puritanical context, and not a genuine public health context?

Or if you just want to lob a bunch of accusations, have at it. Whatever your speed is.
Hey, you were the one being facetious. I only pointed out the obvious [[and being sarcastic). I thought you might actually get a laugh out of it. Anyway, I don't have time for long, drawn-out, crazy, name throwing, verbal battles - only Straw[[??) manning and false equivalencies, suggesting I am defensive [[and not a bit humourous) and have nothing in the way of a comeback. Furthermore - - - - I agree with your statement highlighted above. Absolutely. I just can't figure out what it has to do with your original statement. Maybe it was the facetiousness [[is that a word?), that caught my attention.

Just about as stupid as those pesky drinking & driving laws.

    is.
I don't usually post on here, just read, but Detroitnerd...you are absolutely right. This is purely about politics, and not about health. If it were about health the casinos wouldn't have been exempted. I guess you can't get lung cancer while gambling. Also, using the whole "protecting the health of the workers" bit is pretty weak too. It's not like anybody was forcing them to get a job there, and I'm sure they must have known it was a smoking establishment when they got hired.

I worked at a restaurant that decided to go entirely nonsmoking. We did end up losing a lot of business because of it, but I guess this is different because there will not be [[or should not be) any other smoking alternatives. All of the employees and some customers got used to smoking outside, though.

This law will benefit me as I am a nonsmoker, but this was mostly about politics and little about health.

That was a very ignorant staement. Why should you as a smoker be allowed to pollute the air which everyone in the room has to breathe? You have a right to smoke and damage your own health if you wish, but your right does not trump other people's right to not have to breathe in the stench of your addiction.

    I'm a smoker? Since when?

I don't smoke and I think the law is basically a good thing, but I agree it goes too far. Smoking on an outdoor patio should be ok, as well as private clubs like VFWs. A lot of those old war vets have nothing left but to go to the legion and have a beer and a smoke with their buddies, and we're going to take that away from them?

You referred to me as someone who smokes, despite the fact that I don't smoke and never have.

Personally, I love the new law. It is so poorly thought out that I just have to laugh. I can picture it now, self rightous non smokers turn into snitches for free. Thought and deed police, in effect. Isn't it in the bible, that whoever is without sin, cast the first stone?

I smoke and thank the powers that be for saving me from spending money in establishments that in effect turn me into a second class person.

Tried my hand this weekend at running a private "at home" and it was a huge success. Don't plan on making money from this venture so don't send out vultures. The music, people, discussions were fantastic. Plenty of non smokers in the mix too.

Plan on doing this once a month. BYOB, no cover, just plan to invite people that can come with an open mind and good attitude.

It's effects on my business notwithstanding, this is a great idea. It's what Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas were [[in)famous for : a Salon. A gathering place for all types of people to share, to talk, smoke, drink, fuck, and do whatever comes naturally and mutually.

At this time there's not much to debate. The law goes in to effect in about 10 days. I'm waiting to see what happens after that. It'll probably amount to very little as we observe 'communism, totalitarianism and socialism' taking over our very way of life. Our Constitution will be shredded and the Bill of Rights abolished forever. Maybe the former Soviet Union will arise from it's ashes. Or, Cuba will export its social system to the US. In any case, we're on that long downward trend toward ultimate disaster. Oh, and I forgot to mention the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the government's program of listening in on our communications. But those aren't really too important. They'd never do anything to harm us.
