That's not quite true, they had to wait a couple years to dump their lease. I think 2005 is when it was officially converted to Mike's Fresh Market, and the grand opening took place in 2001.

Ironically the Arabs have been quite successful in that place [[it's much busier than it was during Kroger's era). Other than the Kroger name [[and a few minor things of course), everything has been left the same.

Gregster...I once heard an interview with a member of the Lahser family on J.P. McCarthy's show [[back when WJR was a real radio station) and the family member said they pronounce their last name as "Lasher".

You assume she's not thinking anything when she's staring at you. Have you ever asked her for her thoughts in those times? Because I can think of a few thoughts going through my mind if one of my kids ever took the time to repeatedly try to correct my grammar, especially over stupid shit like the name of a restaurant.

They've been bragging about that phantom mall for about 5 years now [[and counting). The overall blueprint has also changed several times since then.

I'm still not sold on that Meijer yet. They virtually signed the same letter of intent JC Penney's did before backing out. If it did open, it could end up like Target & Kroger and just abandoned the place. And remind you, those stores left long before the recession started.

Didn't Meijer used to be known as Meijer's Thrifty Acres? So using the 's was correct at one time.

They can put up a Taco Bell in about a week. I've never figured out how they do that. Must be all prefabbed. Them folks got it together.

Heck, I recall Ford Field being built in 6-9 Months.

So yeah, it's not imposible with all the technology we have today.

The Empire State Building took 13 months to build, and I think the Fisher Building was done in 18 months.

People around here also say "Penney's," however, and that's never been the actual name. To those coming from somewhere else, this tic is very noticeable, and I've always wondered about it. Never heard the "Ford's factory" explanation, but it makes a lot of sense.

I always called them drinking fountains. The 'water' part was a given.

The one that annoys me is 'ink pen'. I've never seen a pen used for writing that didn't use ink. It would be kind of like saying 'lead pencil', which no one does.

here in milwaukee we prefer bubbler, but thats also something i smoke dope with

bubblers are the kind you find in the park that are always on with water bubbling up out of them. we just use "bubbler" as a coverall. its extremely regional, as its not commonly heard outside the metro milwaukee area

The word pen has a common homophone*[[pin), so that is understandable, IMO.

    *edited for correction

I wasn't excusing all of those, just giving a pass on Meijer's.

    Pen:

    1. An instrument for writing
    2. An enclosure for sheep, pigs, cattle, or other domestic animals
    3. A female swan
    4. Slang term for penitentiary

Is it an "ink pen" or a "pig pen"?

Lasher is correct. That used to be one way how we distinguished "suburbanites" from detroiters, at least over in west town. Always made for a good laugh. I intend to get a pic of the street sign one day.... need a camera 1st though. I dunno.

As for what the others call that water fountain - scuttlebutt could work. I dunno.

As for amazement at bulding a Krogers in a year.... no great feat of engineering there, and Meijers too big and overcrowded to me. Boy I miss Chathams!

Krogers don't like Detroit. It has build it location near Detroit and Krogers will never build it's location on Detroit.

LOL, I was just telling a story that took place at the Chatham's on Greenfield between Ford Road and Michigan Avenue around 1967. I bolted from the store around age four and walked nearly halfway home on Greenfield before my parents found me! [[we lived in the Aviation Sub on Appoline just north of Tireman at the time...heh...so I made it a good couple of miles, not bad for a twerp kid)

We were a big Chatham and Green Giant family...between them, Hudson's and Monkey Wards we were done shopping.

Older people do, which is weird, because pencils don't have lead in them anymore.

Kroger [[like any other business) likes money and Detroit doesn't have money. It's nothing personal.

I don't think adding an "s" is a Detroit thing. I know people who say Wal-Marts.

As if Chicagoans have never said "Field's."
