Default Krogers; Rebuilt in one year

The Krogers store in Grosse Pointe has closed. It is in the village. The plans are for a new Krogers erected in that very same spot within a year. That will be amazingly fast. If Krogers could raze their store then erect a new one up in a year what does it say about the inconpency of Detroit's building program. The Port Authority Terminal will be a two level structure which has taken the city of Detroit two years to erect with no completion date in sight. That say a lot about the way the incompetent leaders of Detroit do things

Just a note, the Detroit Kroger store on Gratiot & 7 Mile [[which is/was probably twice as large than the Grosse Pointe store) was built in one year as well, and that is including the demolition of the old Montgomery Wards.

I guess the whole point is Kroger is not one to play around with their valuable time & money.

That's not quite true, they had to wait a couple years to dump their lease. I think 2005 is when it was officially converted to Mike's Fresh Market, and the grand opening took place in 2001.

Ironically the Arabs have been quite successful in that place [[it's much busier than it was during Kroger's era). Other than the Kroger name [[and a few minor things of course), everything has been left the same.

They've been bragging about that phantom mall for about 5 years now [[and counting). The overall blueprint has also changed several times since then.

I'm still not sold on that Meijer yet. They virtually signed the same letter of intent JC Penney's did before backing out. If it did open, it could end up like Target & Kroger and just abandoned the place. And remind you, those stores left long before the recession started.

Has it only been that long? Seems like someone has been shuffling dirt there for at least 2 years.

    STOP!!!

It Kroger not Krogers. Just like it's Ford not Fords, or Meijer not Meijers, or Target not Targets.

Why do Detroiters do this? I haven't heard this in any other part of the country.

Because not everybody speaks exactly the same form of English? Why do people in Alabama say "y'all?" Why do Canadians say "eh" and "aboot?" Why do Bostonians "pahk the cah?" I say "Krogers" and "Meijers" because that's how I learned to talk, the same as I say "party store" and "pop" and "drinking fountain." Why does this bother you so much?

Most people I've met from the coasts call it a "water fountain." Confused the hell out of me at first because all fountains have water in them.

    Not chocolate fountains.

I always called them drinking fountains. The 'water' part was a given.

The one that annoys me is 'ink pen'. I've never seen a pen used for writing that didn't use ink. It would be kind of like saying 'lead pencil', which no one does.

    Oh, I dunno 'bout that.
This thread has become a sort of fountain, and it ain't water what's coming from it.

    Default "Kmarts" and "Lasher"

My other two pet peeves not yet mentioned here: Kmarts and Lasher Rd.

here in milwaukee we prefer bubbler, but thats also something i smoke dope with

bubblers are the kind you find in the park that are always on with water bubbling up out of them. we just use "bubbler" as a coverall. its extremely regional, as its not commonly heard outside the metro milwaukee area

Lack of understanding on how to use the possessive apostrophe?

I think the o/p was intending to say "Kroger's", not "Krogers". Kroger's is the store that Kroger owns.

The explanation that I heard for why Detroiters add the unnecessary "s" is that it originated from the days when individual families owned the automobile companies. You didn't work in "the Ford factory", you worked in "Ford's factory".

it DOES happen all over the country. Haven't you been outside of Michigan?? People call Kmart 'Kmarts', Walmart 'Walmarts', etc. A friend of mine moved from Tennessee to Texas and worked for Target for a while and griped that people were always calling it 'TargetS'.

I believe the correct way of making this comment is "It's Kroger not Krogers. You had said "It Kroger". Your delivery is quite not there yet.

My Grandma, who lived on St. Marys called it Krogers, ergo we grew up calling it Krogers. It was always a treat to walk over there in the summer.

I heart this thread. I say "Krogers", "Lasher" [[never knew it wasn't pronounced that way until HS), but for some reason, Meijer is just Meijer, and I call it an ATM. But if people don't say "VIN number" most won't know what they're taking about.

And Gistok, I think if we don't call 'em "LEGOs" with the -s, we will confuse all the little kids learning their plurals! *pouring out a tubful of bricks* "Here is your LEGO!"

Don't you mean you would say, "Here are your LEGO?" Even if you commit the faux pas of saying "Legos" you would still use "are," wouldn't you?

Good to see you putting your English Education degree to good use!
