I am posting this link to the Free press article on the efforts of local Catholics for Haiti. Cause I not seeing the reasoning of this statement. It’s a contradiction: “helps”, “self-interest” while the basis of this discussion remains that conservatives are more likely to be concerned with people they associate with, which this posting is more of truth to than a vindication.

First, I am a practicing Catholic and would be deeply offended if someone accused me of something as awful as being a conservative in the American sense of the word.
Secondly, I find it truly eye-rolling that you would include the word "conservative" in reference to an article referring to Bishop Gumbleton. You obviously know nothing of this good saintly man, who would shudder at being called a "conservative".

Yes, there are faithful Catholic socialists and anarchists.
Thirdly, Catholicism is a big, big, big tent. How you can lump 1.5 million people in the region - and 1 BILLION worldwide - as "conservative" because it fits your ideology - is offensive.
Finally, this country is really in deep trouble when every single damn news story has to be translated by the partisans into "conservative" or "liberal" with the good guys on one side and the bad guys on the other.
My brothers and sisters in the pews and beyond are just that - and not liberal nor conservative. Furthermore, I am not surprised at all at the generosity of Catholics in the Archdiocese.
I haven't posted here before but I felt the need to speak up about my faith. I feel sorry for you.

To turn this discussion away from noxious partisans, I go to Sweetest Heart of Mary. I used to go to St. Florian. I would highly recommend either of these churches - they rival European churches in terms of beauty - however the priests often have very thick accents - helps if you mowisz po polsku.

DetroitPole, sorry to "deeply offend" you with what I thought could not be interpreted as anything other than a sarcastic post. I never would have imagined it would have elicited such a hostile response - from a fellow Catholic no less! Yes, I do realize that there are Catholic liberals, socialists, anarchists, monarchists, totalitarianists, etc., and I'm sure you are also aware that twice as many Catholics describe themselves as conservative than as liberal. Jesus died for all people, even the most corrupt despot, but I think his teachings would more accurately be described as conservative than liberal. I don't define "conservative" as being "closed-minded" as many liberals do; I define it as holding firm to the founding principles embodied in scriptures or, in the case of politics, the written Constitution of our country.
