    Default Time Mag Detroit Blog

I think this statement from the Time Mag Detroit blog sums up my thoughts,"Personally, I'm tired of every sanctimonious cat with a gilded "good book" in his hands screeching at law-abiding taxpayers to live the way he demands. Your religion is your business, not something you foist on the rest of us. Many religious leaders in this town need to respect that not everyone in metro Detroit belongs to their church or mosque, subscribes to their faiths or adheres to what they think of as their "value systems."

Read more: http://detroit.blogs.time.com/2010/0...#ixzz0fu0qN0ZM I believe that this is just a testing of the new City Council by the so called religious political power structure, to see just how much influence they have in 2010 and beyond.

Skidway, i agree 100%. If the preachers are doing such a great job why does Detroit have the ungodly problems with crime, drugs, violence, homicide, etc. that permeate life in the city? It seems to me that they should be concentrating on doing their own job well rather than pissing and moaning about stip clubs and their perceived ills.

Thanks for the link. It was a good read. The city council should trash this ordinance and move on to things that are important like moving the city in a new direction.

Interesting read from the blog. I do agree that the mega churches are trying to flex some muscle with the new council. Just wish preachers would stick to their pulpits or do good deeds in their hood.

Personally belong to UCC. We accept and indeed embrace all people. In my neighborhood there are store front churches that regularly get out our city youth for civic projects. These are the churches I respect. Get our youth engaged.

My attitude is live and let live. Been to a Casino three times in my life, been to Porn clubs three times too. Their existance doesn't bother me. Personally think weed should be legal [[really legal) too. Don't smoke that stuff either.

The new wave seems to be almost victorian. Next we will hear don't get your hair done or nails extended since it would be vain glorious. I don't do that either but for people who want to, it doesn't bother me.

Keep the creeps out of politics. Separation of church and state. We will know soon enough if elected officials have some integrity or just more of the same.

Been there done that and let's move on. I enjoy your posts.

    Thanks for posting.

I have never understood the need for religions to attempt to implement their morality on a nation. To me the answer is simple - you disapprove of abortion, then don't have one. You disapprove of same-sex marriage then don't marry someone of the same sex. You disapprove of alcohol, then don't drink it. You disapprove of eating pork, then don't eat pork. You think women should wear veils and robes, then if you are a woman dress that way. Why attempt to enforce your religious standards on everyone, including the vast majority of people that don't see issues the way you see them?

Is Winans proposing an alternative to strip clubs? What would happen if those establishments are closed? More people will be out of a job and buildings and parking lots will be left to deteriorate. I have never been to a strip club, but the ones on Eight Mile that I have driven by seem clean, safe, and well-maintained. I have no problem with them myself. It's crap to say that girls cannot walk the streets safely because of strip clubs when the reality is that it's not terribly safe for girls or boys to walk the streets in most parts of Detroit and some suburbs.

History shows you can't legislate morality, if the business is legal, let it be. Detroit could however look for a better red light district than 8 mile.

That's the idea, to get these places to close down. Winans knows that he can't rally enough people to picket these businesses day in, day out so he is attempting to de-fang them by stripping them of the one thing that keeps them in operation: revenue from customers. If the CC were to implement everything the preachers are suggesting, here's what would happened.

The girls will quit because they would ban the v.i.p rooms which would mean no lap dance. Add the six foot rule and the girls' dollars would decrease big time

No alcohol would mean the bar's revenue would quickly dry up. No more 8.00 Heineken at Bouzouki, no 12.00 shots of Patron at LaChambre means they would be out of business lickely-split.

    "...lickely-split."

Wow, I figured that those VIP Rooms may get a little out of hand, at times, but dang.

I was thinking of Warden Samuel Norton when I used that term.

I agree with everybody that standards are just too high! If you don't want prostitution on Michigan Ave [[I live there) - just don't be a prostitute! If you are pretty sure that a third-trimester abortion that involves crushing a skull and then delivering a dead fetus is bad - just don't have one! People should be allowed to do what they want in the privacy of a club! They just need to keep it inside and not be having oral sex in the parking lot or urinating on people's lawns or blasting their radios all over! its obvious that the patrons of those clubs have low community standards, but whose business is it, I have to ask! Not mine!

I wish so-called men of God would focus first on people who are in desperate need and suffering, and worry later about "saving" adults engaged in consenting, legal behavior. It's a matter of degree: sure it would be nice to get the gambling addict to stop or get the stripper to stop stripping, or get the strip club patron not to spend time in such a sleazy environment, but it's more important to get the homeless a home, or heroin addicts to a free meth clinic, or a hungry person a hot meal, etc. etc. Priorities. It's like triage - deal with the most acute emergencies first.
