    Default An interesting thread...

    Ahhhh, whatta thread!

    I lived in N.O. for 22 years pre-kat; was a displaced person in Detroit metro for three years post-kat; now returned to N.O. because that's where the jobs were.

    I really, really like both places. I feel at home in both places. I sometimes end up defending both places to outsiders who don't know Jacque $iht about either one.

    N.O. has po'boys, Detroit has Coneys
    N.O. has gumbo, Detroit has lemon rice soup
    N.O. has sno cones, Detroit has snow
    N.O. has a river, Detroit has a river
    N.O. has jazz, Detroit has jazz
    N.O. has Big Shot soda, Detroit has Faygo
    N.O. has Mississippi, Detroit has Canada [[sorry, couldn't resist
    N.O. leveraged its overnight catastrophe into billions of dollars of federal construction assistance; see just one recent example here
    http://www.canadianbusiness.com/mark...tent=D9DGA5QG4
    Detroit got its own bailout, but the difference is that in N.O. the bucks are going into infrastructure in the city itself, while in Detroit the $$$ went to corporations to stimulate car production in places which usually weren't named Detroit.

    Pre-Kat parts of N.O. were sparsely populated, but they were populated, while relatively few neighborhoods were densely populated.

    Post Kat entire regions of N.O. are simply empty and have returned to what would be called prairie in Detroit; but other parts of the city, those that either didn't flood or didn't flood badly, have become more densely populated than before.

    Default Here's a difference...

    The Culture of New Orleans is basically comfortable with androgyny and having fun with gender bending. I have a hard time imagining an event like this taking place in Detroit, especially not on the scale being talked about here;

    I am not witty as most people on this board but I say both cities have soul and a shared French history.
