    Just curious;

    I don't have access to any of the papers. I just scan the website headlines. Has there been any mention of this? I know a lot of people didn't care for or about her, but she was an icon of sorts and fairly well known in the day. Might be an good human interest piece.

    Any scuttlebut in Greektown?

    I'd guess most of the people in Greektown have no idea who she is. It's been 20-30 years since she's been a fixture, and Greektown is not the same place it was back then. I remember her from when she used to sleep in the doorway of the Athens bar, and frankly, she wasn't my favorite person.

    Stella died last week according to a news release sent out by the nursing home.

    Greektown is not the same. I saw Stella once at Hellas. They were giving her food straight from the kitchen. Now both Stella and Hellas are gone.

    I remember her... she seemed a bit ill tempered at times, but I just respectfully stepped aside of her rants which seemed at the time to not be focused on any one in particular. Then she just disappeared and I wondered what became of her......

    I'm just amazed that she lived as long as she did. When I blew town in '84, I was sure she was on her last legs. RIP, old girl.

    May God rest her soul. The Greektown that she knew has changed quite a bit; I'm not sure for the better or not either. Stella was there back when I frequented Greektown a lot more. I never thought of her as dangerous in any way. In so many ways I felt for her being an older woman out on the streets alone but knowing so many people kept an eye out for her, cared for her, and even fed her gave me hope for humanity. Stella's gone now and I still hope that the kindness that people showed in her is still there. For all those that cared for her in some small way, please take a moment and be proud of yourselves.

    I remember her from ages ago [[from Trapper's Alley days and earlier). I too, thought she was on her "last legs". Just goes to show the resilience of us Detroiters. RIP Stella, RIP.

    The 90's for me was Friday, Saturday and sometime Sunday visits to Greektown. I'm miss Athens Bar, Trapper's Bar, the Oyster Bar, the old Marilyn's, the Music Menu Cafe and Legends wasn't far away but I know every single weekend I would see Stella. I didn't know her name but I remember very well. She would be on Monroe strolling with a million pins on her coat. I considered her a character of Greektown. Something to remind you where you were. I miss the old Greektown. It was what Detroit was all about ordinary people before the damn casino killed the soul and with Stella gone I know the old Greektown is really gone.

    When I read the news article I come straight here. Totally amazing this old girl without proper medical care until she went into the home was able to live that many years. Guess we will wonder for a long time about her history.

    There is no reason for me to go to Greektown anymore. No Marilyn's, no Hellas, no International, no Stella, no anything. We drive through Monroe on the way home....that's it. Too painful.

    Leoqueen, wasn't International the teeny little place that was sort of brightly-lit [[by Greektown standards) and mostly small booths? If so, manohman, that place had the greatest lamb & rice dish I've ever eaten. It was exquisite. I don't know what they did with that rice, but sometimes plain ol' rice ain't just plain ol' rice...!!

    Yup. That was it. Had a few small square tables too I think.

    Looked more like a Coney Island type place.
