While driving a German acquaintance down Jefferson years ago, past the lakefront mansions of the Grosse Pointes, he actually gasped when we entered Detroit at Alter. "Who threw the switch? Looks like we just entered East Berlin in the 1960s" was his observation.
Who would have believed it, twenty years ago, if told that it would soon be easier and more convenient to cross all borders in Europe than to visit Windsor from Detroit?
