I drove by the Ice House today. For comparison's sake, I also swung by the Ice Tree on Belle Isle. One of them was beautiful. One of them, not so much.

I posted a few photos and thoughts to the new blog:

I'm in agreement about the beauty of the tree over the house but I think the fact that it was once a habitable house speaks volumes of what was once there. I'm not claiming to completely understand the concept of it all but it is a sad state of affairs here when a house goes completely abandoned and into disrepair like that.

Why didn't the artist make a statement the old fashioned way ....torch it....

A lot of negative Nellie's here... I thought it was pretty neat.

Where is the ice tree on Belle Isle?

The ice tree is near the intersection of Riverbank Drive and Vista Drive:

To get to it from the entrance, turn left on Casino Way, and then left on Central Way and drive down to Vista, just past the entrance to the abandoned zoo. It'll be by the water to your left. Can't miss it.

In the long term, I wonder how projects like this and the guy selling 1 inch squares will benefit Detroit.

I just read there will be a Phase II to the project. He is going to put homeless people in the yard and spray them too.

He is going to donate their bodies to science. This will underscore the fact that there are homeless people in the city.

Here are fotos from yesterday. I went because they announced the location in the news, and I thought there'd be a swarm of humans. There was indeed.

As far as art: poorly executed. I wanted it to be covered in ice. All of it.

As far as concept: I personally think the abandoned buildings all speak for themselves. Loud and clear.

Detroit has become a sort of playground for outsiders with an "escapism" mentality. Detroit is basically the flavor of the week for Euro/Coastal creative types. It is becoming rather sad to see so many outsiders come to Detroit and act like they are new explorers or act like they are on the berge of rediscovering a city.

"hey man, check out my portfolio of abandoned structures in Detroit man....yeah, I am badass"

    Great pictures mauser.

I guess the weather did not fully cooperate with the out of town artists.
