I heard today from a DPS admin. friend that enrollment is way above the prediction. The DPS budget called for 84,000 students; the actual enrollment is somewhere closer to 88,000 and rising. It's still a 6,000 student loss but many districts in Michigan are reporting some sort of loss due to the economy and people leaving the state. As DPS employees know, enrollment spikes AFTER 4th Wednesday count due to charter schools sending back trouble makers and special ed kids. One school reported 17 new students from charters in one day, THE DAY AFTER THE STUDENT COUNT.

The state needs to fix this. I have no problem with charter schools but c'mon, let's be a little fair about it if they're really ALL THAT GOOD like the press and Nolan Finley say they are.
