According to some who remember when it was commissioned, it is a single sculpture, an old-fashioned car horn. What we thought was an 8-ball is actually the bulb part that you would squeeze to blow the horn. The 8 was painted on when it became the 8th precinct. Probably someone thought that would be cute.

Ah, so that explains it. nice pic of the horn, and an interesting reimagining/ reinterpretation of the horn, whoever did that. I always thought that 8 Mile should have 8 balls on the street signs anyway. Just for fun.
