The cost isn't the bus, its the driver. Yes you would save a little money by going smaller but not $25+/hr plus health care and retirement benefits. Please correct me if I'm wrong on what city bus drivers make.

    You are right

At Livonia city hall, the residents complained that Dearborn paid less to SMART and got three times more bus service. I enjoyed going to Dearborn to work on SMART before the opt. out and worked to fill up the buses with SMART officials. The Middlebelt 285 buses were full in the mornings and evenings as a result of my efforts.

That's why I'm opposed to the state cuts in funding to SMART. These cuts are stupid. Instead we should all work together to improve our transportation system for everyone and help lower costs to attract good jobs back to our state.

I think SMART and DDOT should get the full 10 percent of the state fuel tax that Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties pays then we should all work to fill up the buses because a bus that is about half full nearly pays the operating expenses and takes cars off crowded freeways. Other cities remove cars from freeways and I think Detroit should also. If we do then more people will move into Detroit and then the city tax revenues go back up. And then we don't have to lay off the bus drivers.

But, NO we have to live with the drastic state cuts and large bulldozers and big freeways because of you DYer's who won't support my website.

You will all see when we pay a Sales tax at McDonald's for the bus drivers and the NEW large freeways. These things are coming fast, unless people like me who want to fight the big freeways to get mass transit funding are taken seriously.

Soon, it will be too late if the SMART tax passes again next August 2010 because then MDOT, SEMCOG and Detroit and Livonia city council members won't listen.

Maybe they will listen if the SMART tax failed in all three counties? If this renewal does fail then the state would have to pay for the buses instead of the $2 Billion dollar freeway expansions. Then the public would see the truth about this MASSive waste of money without first repairing SMART and DDOT and the unfunded mandates of SEMCOG

See the Trainman website under DETROIT LINKS

It's YES, I want the freeways.

    OR,

It's NO, I do not want the freeways and want the public buses back with state money.
