    Default Detroit Sees Fewest Murders Since 1966

    Detroit sees fewest murders since 1966, carjackings at record low [[clickondetroit.com)

    The city of Detroit ended 2023 with the fewest number of murders since 1966. Police Chief James White said the city is on the right path, but more needs to be done.

    One needs the per capita murder rate to get a useful picture. Detroit had over a million more people in 1966. Its murder rate is about 41 now, probably still in the top 5 nationally. The 2022 rate was 50, with 307 murders.

    A lower homicide rate for the D is improvement and good news.

    Learn from what strategy’s were successful and apply much more of them. The fact is the homicide rate is still way to high and more resources need to be implemented at the problem at a higher scale. Money for law enforcement, speedy justice, community policing, blight removal, cooperation with Federal authorities. Whatever works. Get on it. Cut the violent crime down significantly people will come to live, work, start businesses. It’s a proven track record in the US, lower crime significantly and the local economy improves considerably. Really good things start happening fast. In the places where they have done it they call it a economic boom.

    In 2018, Detroit had 261 homicides, the fewest number since 1966. Over the first 11 months of this year, Detroit has had 228 homicides. City officials believe they will finish the year well below the 2018 record.

    The spikes are usually due to drug and gang violence. Are they actually getting a handle on some of it?

    Maybe Richard thought you wanted the actual number since the per capita or rate is provided in the 2nd post of this thread.

    So murder rate is 41-50 per 10,000.
    41x10k=410k population?

    You're kidding right? The rate is per 100,000 based on 650,000 residents.

    A few presentations of the stats w/some context for better understanding:

    "Detroit's population in 1960 was 1.67 million — more than double the 639,111 counted in 2020, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. The homicide rate per 100,000 people in 1966 was 12.8 based on the 1960 population, whereas 252 killings with the current population is a rate of 39.4."

    For comparative context:

    Homicide Rates for:

    Auburn Hills: 64 [[over 50% higher than Detroit!)

    Windsor: 0.85 [[2 homicides, 233,000 population)

    Chicago: 22.85

    Toronto: 2.43
