Default Detroit mom sues over use of facial recognition tech

Detroit mom sues over use of facial recognition tech
Advocates of facial recognition technology say it can be a game-changer in situations like finding and stopping an active shooter. But critics are concerned about privacy and the potential for serious mistakes.
"The ACLU of Michigan is now ... among those calling for DPD to end its use of facial recognition technology. That group says Woodruff is the sixth person in the nation and the third person in Detroit to report being falsely accused of a crime based on the technology. The ACLU is also pointing out tonight that each of those accused individuals were black."

"Half of the nation's six cases have been in Detroit."

If you have the first name of someone, is it ok to search that name on a database and see if you can find someone there who matches the description and circumstances of the crime?

If you have a photo of someone, is it ok to search that photo on a database and see if you can find someone who matches the description and circumstances of the crime?

People get falsely accused of crimes all the time. That's a separate issue from whether or not police can use photos in their investigations.

You would think the police would need more evidence to go and arrest someone than, "She kind of looks like the criminal."

I'd love to know more on this "traumatic experience". How long was she held for? Was she actually taken to jail or just brought in for questioning [[I'm betting it's the latter)? How do you blame facial recognition tech when the story clearly states the victim picked her photo out of a lineup?

My guess is it's just another story getting blown up by the news and an attorney looking for a pay day.

Update from WWJ News Radio today:

    1. A supervisor must review all the evidence before an arrest can be made.
    2. Facial recognition results cannot be used in photo line ups.

Considering that software is going to return a best match even if there is no exact match, and that the greater the pool of photos considered, the closer that best match will appear to be to an exact match, this makes sense.

Facial recognition can't detect its own false positives and even a human can't differentiate between identical twins so photos alone are insufficient. Facial recognition can narrow the pool of suspects but additional evidence beyond photos is necessary to avoid false positives.

"That is, literally, perhaps one of the most counterintuitive things you could do. Because it's going to already produce look-a-likes," [DPD Chief] White said. "In other words, you're not going to put a suspect's twin in a line up."
It should be noted that when innocents are convicted, true criminals escape justice. For that reason, true law and order advocates are very much against convicting innocents.

A growing body of research exposes divergent error rates across demographic groups, with the poorest accuracy consistently found in subjects who are female, Black, and 18-30 years old.

In a striking example, the model surveillance program Project Green Light [[PGL) was enacted in 2016, installing high-definition cameras throughout the city of Detroit. The data, which streams directly to Detroit PD, can be tested for face recognition against criminal databases, driver’s licenses, and state ID photos; almost every Michigan resident is in this system.

There is a map within the article that shows where the cameras are located within the City of Detroit .

I kinda makes one wonder, the guy that kidnapped the little girl,if the cameras are feeding in real time and being they knew who he was and had a photo from his last arrest, the system would have flagged him as soon as he entered the city limits.

So this how we fight crime, with a click of a mouse.

Face Recognition ' MICROsoftware' may not work on black people because our faces look the same.

You have to get with the program, most Americans are willing to give up their rights for freedom,if a few get snagged up during the process and as long as it is not them,it is worth it for that false sense of security.

They already have functioning robots that walk and talk like a human, strap some facial recognition on them combined with AÍ and a gun,and you do not need police anymore, they can patrol a district and zap anybody that gets flagged, then an drone will drop down and pick up the body, just think how safe we will be.

Find the right make up and it is easy to fool FR,it does not really stop the criminals it just gives those in power the ability or reason to create a documented data base,Kinda like China does.

Technology,it can save our life or end it depending on who’s hands it is in.

Like I posted before, they have a drone that is smaller then a pack of cigarettes, loaded with 1 9MM round,it has FR,drop it over a city and it will seek out and destroy the target, they actually already have the technology where they do not need police on the streets.

I wonder how many are being treated for Scopophobia when the reality is they actually are being constantly watched.
