Default Detroit City Airport in the running for 2,000 job air taxi plant

This would be huge for the city.
Detroit city airport a contender for Toyota-backed air taxi maker's new plant

State and local economic development officialsare working to land a Toyota-backed aviation company at Detroit city airport for a project that could bring a $500 million investment and up to 2,000 jobs, Crain's has learned. The Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport is on Santa Cruz, Calif.-based Joby Aviation's short list of finalists for an eVTOL [[electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft manufacturing and research and development facility, according to people involved in the proposalwho asked not to be named amid discussions with the company.
Michigan is competing with several other states for the project, and a decision is expected by June, the sources said. Mayor Mike Duggan is among those leading the charge on the deal, which also has incentives support from the Michigan Economic Development Corp., the sources said.
The bid for the Joby project coincides with the Michigan Central mobility district coming to life in Corktown as the city looks to establish mobility tech prowess. If the Joby project comes to fruition, it would also mean new life for the long-struggling airport on the city's east side.

They are California based, which is not a right to work state, they will be well aware and feel right at home.

In 2018 this company also announced plans to do the same thing at the auto show, not sure if they ever got off the ground.

Designed and built by AirSpaceX parent compant Detroit Aircraft Corporation [[DAC) at Detroit City Airport, Mobi-One is targeted at the point-to-point commuter market as a clean, quiet alternative to road transport that relies on "lean automotive design and mass production techniques" to be affordable to produce.

With the airlines dropping the smaller city hubs, they may be positioning to fill that void with short commuter flights using electric planes.

You have to wonder though with all of the battery fires on airplanes and in vehicles, who is the first volunteer to try ‘em out?

6 months ago the mayor wanted to level the airport, good thing he did not.

The airport need to stay. It would had been nice to have planes flying in and out of City airport once again. Visitors will have short distances to travel downtown to their hotels while attending events downtown especially as something like an ummmm NFL Draft. Who wants to take a shuttle, cab, Uber, or Detroit Metro from Metro Airport to downtown especially in inclimate weather which will stall or slow down the commute on the freeway

You could fly this from DET to DTW to fly on a real plane.
