Let's not let hyperbole carry us away, here...the Alien and Sedition Acts under John Adams, the APL under Wilson, and a few other eras were dark periods of US History regarding suppression and hostility to dissenting views.

I would agree, however, that antagonism towards dissenters was worse under Dubya than they have currently been exhibited by Obama.

you have a point - to an extent. the pervasiveness of today's media renders my statement correct. you could also include the ransacking of the offices of union leaders and feminists and their arrest for posessing and distributing literature in the mix as well, and good ol' evil joe M

FROM CC BATSON'S OWN DEFINITION OF FASCISM:

    fascism [[[fash-iz-uhm)]

A system of government that flourished in Europe from the 1920s to the end of World War II. Germany under Adolf Hitler, Italy under Mussolini, and Spain under Franco were all fascist states. As a rule, fascist governments are dominated by a dictator, who usually possesses a magnetic personality, wears a showy uniform, and rallies his followers by mass parades; appeals to strident nationalism; and promotes suspicion or hatred of both foreigners and “impure” people within his own nation, such as the Jews in Germany. Although both communism and fascism are forms of totalitarianism, fascism does not demand state ownership of the means of production, nor is fascism committed to the achievement of economic equality. In theory, communism opposes the identification of government with a single charismatic leader [[the “cult of personality”), which is the cornerstone of fascism. Whereas communists are considered left-wing, fascists are usually described as right-wing.

Thanks for clarifying that extremism on the right = FASCISM.

explicitly discouraged nudge nudge, wink wink. yeah, right.

you also clearly do not know the difference between nationalism and nationalization which is moot, anyway, since the only "nationalized" companies essentially asked for it as a, now understand this, TEMPORARY measure. it isn't true nationalization [[see British Leland) but collateral on a loan.

Right wing meaning authoritarian...not conservative. In that sense it is correct, and Obama is demonstrating some serious authoritarian tendencies.

If by "authoritarian" you mean one who has high expectations and gets off his ass and works instead of crying and pandering to the lowest common denominator, I'd argue that we need more of it from more people in this country.

Oh, do tell us what gulag in which you're imprisoned. You poor, poor thing. Can you remind us of all the rights that you've had stripped since January 20?

The one where 50% of my earnings are confiscated every year. The name of that right is individual property rights...and it is the most important unalienable right we have..

Batts seems to think he didn't know that being in a 50% tax bracket was willful on his part- perhaps if he's so terrified of being at a 50% tax rate, then he should change professions.

Altruism/volunteerism are virtues worthy of the wealthy. Show us you can.

Problem is, he's really not paying that much with all of the deductions and wealth entitlements he's open to, being enormously wealthy and all.

Dude, you need to hire a good accountant. Nobody I know who makes a six figure salary pays that much.

I wouldn't exactly qualify as poor, and you are obviously enormously wealthy, so if all taxes are equal apart from income taxes, why don't you just take a lower-paying job?

Your marginal rate would decrease, and you'd be a happier bat.

You forget, Bats thinks altruism is the root of all evil

Volunteerism, charity, assistance freely offered...all good. Altruism defined as sacrifice of self interest and welfare for others and often imposed involuntarily via government redistribution of wealth as in socialism...IS EVIL.

??? My last comment on this thread was about taxes, not charity.

Regardless, I am not at all inconsistent when I comment that giving voluntarily is fine and not the same thing as altruism.

Altruism=behavior by an animal that may be to its disadvantage but that benefits others of its kind, as a warning cry that reveals the location of the caller to a predator.

Cry me a river, Glenda, you buffoon.

Wonder how much he's paid for each tear?

I'd take his weekly salary and vow not to ask for a year of my own. And I wouldn't look like an ass on national TV.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

You have to EARN wealth...no take it, or have it given to you after being taken from someone else. That involves risk and work...2 things most liberals don't comprehend.

It's a figure of speech, "Doc."

What did your parents do to you? Lock you in a closet? Steal something from you?

You're so hung-up on people "taking" something from you, it begs a larger question.

You can't take anything with you, so spread that monstrous wealth around and make someone else's life a little easier, or you'll realize that your passing won't leave a gap in anyone's heart. And that includes family.

Individual rights to the ownership of your own ideas/thoughts/efforts and the products of same is a sacred unalienable right. As such, it is irrelevant what someone other than said individual thinks about what a person does with what is theirs...bury it with their corpse after death? Give it away? Will it to heirs? Nobody else's business.
