Kinda amazing how 13 years after Partridge Creek Mall was completed and dubbed "Sommerset East" by a lot of East side locals, it is being referenced as past its useful life. I worked at Nino Salvaggio right there when the mall and Wal Mart were going up, wondering why we needed a mall 2 miles down the road from another [[Lakeside) mall, cannibalizing business from one another. I just figured Lakeside would be the one to get squashed, not the both of them!

Is it all really online? Or big box retailers? And neighborhood retail has been dead for decades.

Kind of bleak. Malls, despite being purposed for consumption, are one of the few places people cluster in any sort of "civic" space. And the pandemic has only exacerbated this isolation from our fellow citizen.
Part of it is that more folks are shopping online, but also, middle class shoppers are a lot more budget conscious now and have resorted to shopping at discount stores like Burlington, TJ Maxx and Marshalls, which have never been healthier.

Just as well, upscale/luxury malls such as Somerset are doing fine.

Taubman sold Lakeside then put up Partridge Creek to take Lakeside down. I always thought that was a d*ck move.

^ Lovely. And I never visited either, pre-pandemic. Well maybe Lakeside once!
