    Default The Black Ghost

    This popped up on YouTube.

The Black Ghost was a legend,1970 426 hemi that ruled the streets of Detroit,it tells the story of the car and the man behind it who was a legend in his own.

Lots of really cool video and history.

The fabled 1970 Dodge HEMI Challenger dubbed the Black Ghost just crossed the auction block for a whopping $975,000. Add in the auction premium of 10 percent and this classic muscle car sold for $1,072,500. It comes with a cool story and a verifiably rare build sheet.

Virtually the entire story "seems" to be a myth. Seemingly made up by the son, who works at / runs a video promotions company.

A Mopar expert that talked to the son and also inspected the car before it's restoration states that there was never any rumor back in the day of it being fast, and there is no evidence the car was ever modified from stock.

Essentially it's a stock Hemi Challanger, which would have done a low to mid 6 sec 0-60, and a quarter mile in the mid 14 second range.

The original owner was a cop that never hung out in the car scene, but instead would go out for a bit of a drive, and then come back home. There are no reports from back in the day of it "Ruling" the streets, or being feared, or winning or even participating in a race.

But kudos to the son for making a video about it and getting Hagerty to hype the car up before the sale. All that effort got him an extra $800k over book.

I bet you it doesn’t score high on low gas mileage either, but hey, somebody ran with the loot. Lol

And a good running 440 would perform as well or better than a 426 Hemi.

And a lot less maintenance. Hemi’s “IF” they were tuned right were still rough on spark plugs.

My stock 1967 GTO was 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and ran a consistent 14.2 to 14.5 in the 1/4 and it was not a hemi.

Kudos though if the Legend story was made up,I would hire that kid for marketing in a heartbeat with that kind of result.

In a moment of weakness I bought a 69 Mach-1 for $200 from a girl that was sitting on the side of the road broke down and tired of it.

That was 13.9 in the 1/4 ,I kinda think the Hemi was overrated and more so of a wow it’s a hemi - they are saying the rebuild kits for them are close to $20k .

The new ones with the scat pac are no joke though.

Exactly. The 440 made about the same torque, but at a much lower rpm. They also weighed 170 lbs less. So they would easily outrun Hemi cars on the street.

Similar story with the Ford 429 Boss. An engine made with HUGE intake ports to run high-rpm all day in nascar. But on the street, a 428 SCJ would eat it's lunch.

    4.9 downhill,. yeah, right.

    With the 400 cube motor and a 4-speed, a stock "67 Goat ran 6.6 sec 0-60's.

A magazine once got one to do a 4.9 run, but that was at a prepped drag strip, with M&H tires, and a speed kit consisting of modified rockers, thinner head gaskets to bump compression, a jetted carb an intake heat kit, and modified ignition system.

Those older cars "felt" faster than they were, because everything was so loose and the tires were so bad. With today's stiff chassis', radial tires, rack&pinion steering etc, you have to go a lot faster to feel as if you're doing anything special.

they did not need to do all of that

But taking over the 360-horsepower slot from the discontinued tri-carburetor setup was a new single four-barrel High Output option. It cost $77 extra and added a higher-lift camshaft, free-flow exhaust manifolds, and an open-element air cleaner. Of the 81,722 GTOs built for '67, 13,827 were equipped with the HO engine.

For another $263, the 1967 Pontiac GTO's HO mill could be fitted with Ram Air. These ultimate GTO V-8s had extra-strong valve springs and a longer-duration cam; they were underrated at 360 horsepower.

Furthermore, the 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO’s real-world performance made many Ferraris sweat. The Ferrari 275 GTB which completed the 0-60 MPH challenge in 6.0 seconds wouldn’t dare near the Tempest GTO, let alone challenge this beloved Pontiac for a drag race. The 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO Coupe did 0-60 MPH in 4.6 seconds and secured the runner-up position in the ranking.

A whole list of American iron that had no problem achieving those numbers without going downhill.

I guess one can say,yea right, about anything if they really do not know .
