The last U.S. horse slaughterhouse was put out of business in 2007 with a combination of state and federal initiatives. Since then, horses have been shipped long distances to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. That is one reason unwanted horses are let loose and wind up with herds of wild horses. Mustang blood has been diluted. There is a breed called Spanish Mustangs which was and is an attempt to identify wild horses that have the most Mustang characteristics.
There have been attempts to both make horse slaughter legal again in the U.S. but in January 2014 Congress and Pres. Obama passed a budget with language making it illegal.
